Heidelberg Athletics Hall of Fame
Both figuratively and literally, few student-athletes have helped set the Heidelberg Volleyball program up for success quite like Morgan Magers Hurd ’10.
As the setter for a program on the rise, Magers was responsible for putting her teammates in position to succeed -- and few did it better. She finished her career with 5,639 assists, nearly 1,900 more than any other player in Heidelberg history. She also ranks among the program’s career leaders in sets played and digs.
Her ability to run the offense earned recognition well beyond the Ohio Athletic Conference. Magers was an AVCA All-American in both 2008 and 2009, earning Second Team honors as a senior, Twice she was named to the AVCA All-Region team, and was a three-time All-OAC selection, including First Team honors in each of her final two seasons.
Magers was equally accomplished in the classroom. She earned CoSIDA Academic All-America and Academic All-District honors and was a three-time Academic All-OAC selection.
During her career, Heidelberg climbed to the top of the OAC. After her team went 4-5 in conference play as a freshman, Magers capped her career with the 2009 OAC Regular Season title -- the program’s first since 1986.Â
To date, Magers still holds the top four marks in single-season assists, including a program-best 1,447 in 2007. In the OAC, she sits third in career assists and is the only player in the top five to have played part of her career after the NCAA moved from 30-point sets to the current 25-point system.Â
Today, Magers is still helping others find their way. She lives in Orient, Ohio, with her husband, Michael, and their children, Madison and Miles, and works as a fifth-grade teacher for South-Western City Schools. Away from the classroom, she often can be found cheering on her children, spending time outdoors or traveling with her family. Additionally, she moonlights -- or, perhaps more accurately, sunlights -- as a cut-flower farmer for local farmers’ markets and communities.
