Heidelberg Athletics Hall of Fame
Robert J. Warren became affiliated with Heidelberg College at an early age because of his mother who was a 1920 alumna. Warren continued to build on those ties his entire life.
While at Heidelberg, he participated in football for four years under head coach and fellow hall of famer Paul Hoernemann and also was a three-year member of the track and field team under the guidance of Joe Malmisur and Marv Frye. He was a two-year starter at fullback and linebacker and helped the Berg compile a 29-5-2 record and earn an Ohio Athletic Conference Championship in 1952.
Upon graduation from Heidelberg, he served two years in the Army before embarking on his coaching and teaching career which would span nearly 40 years. In the first six years of his professional experience Warren coached in the football, basketball and track high school ranks while earning his master's degree from Bowling Green State University in 1959.
In 1969, Warren returned to the Berg as the defensive coach for the football team as well as the head track and field coach, intramural director, athletic trainer and instructor. Warren helped to lead Heidelberg to its 1972 Stagg Bowl Championship where his defense yielded an average of just 214.8 yards per game, including just 96.6 rushing yards per game. None of the Berg's 11 opponents were able to total more then 172 yards rushing in a game and only scored a combined 106 points.
Warren received his specialist degree from Indiana University in 1971. From 1973-1977 he was an assistant football coach at Indiana State and was a health and physical education instructor.
Warren continued his education following his specialist's degree and earned his doctorate degree in higher education from Indiana in 1979. He went on to coach at Rose-Hulman Institute and South High School for 15 years.
Warren and his wife, Joan, have four children and four grandchildren.
