Heidelberg Athletics Hall of Fame
If one were looking for the perfect example of a student-athlete, the search would stop with Paul W. Devine.
Devine participated in football, basketball, baseball, and track while at Heidelberg. With all those activities Andy still found time for his studies. A botany and education major, he consistently made the Dean's list for high academic achievement. During his senior year he was named to Who's Who in American Colleges and Universities.
Devine was a member of the first team ever coached by the legendary Paul Hoernemann, playing both offense and defense. He was named most valuable player by his teammates on two occasions, 1946 and 47, and was co-captain of the 1948 squad that finished 9-0.
Devine arrived at Heidelberg in 1942, midway through his freshman year however, he was drafted into the service. While in the service he played some football at Georgetown University in Washington D.C. He returned to "College Hill" in 1946 and began to be noticed immediately.
During the 1947 season, Devine led the Student Princes in rushing, racking up 571 yards on 102 carries. He was also the leading scorer with 54 points.
1948 saw the Student Princes compile the best offensive and defensive statistics among Ohio's colleges, scoring 299 points while allowing only 26. Devine contributed 685 yards on 114 carries and 8 touchdowns as Heidelberg became the only team in Ohio to win nine games.
Devine was rewarded for his outstanding performance - 1,256 yards and 17 touchdowns in two seasons with a contract from the Green Bay Packers. After graduating with a bachelors degree in 1949, Devine moved to Covington High School where he was head football, basketball and track coach from 1950-53. His football teams compiled a 24-2-1 record over three years including two unbeaten seasons. He guided the basketball team to the regional tournament and his track teams placed in both the district and regional meets.
In August of 1953 Devine entered the business world with O.M. Scott & Sons as Director of Financial Services. He currently is Director of Corporate Relations for O.M. Scott as well as being a member of the pension and profit sharing committees.
