Heidelberg Athletics Hall of Fame
A naturally-gifted athlete and born student leader, Brandy was Heidelberg's equivalent of the Big Man on Campus (BMOC) in the early 1930s.
His charm and wit and his dedication to duty as a student leader earned him the title of Heidelberg's most popular man. The election was "by a decisive majority," said the 1933 Aurora yearbook.
Heidelberg's No.1 golfer, Brandy also excelled in football and basketball.
As a junior on the 1931-32 basketball team, he shared the starting role at guard with Merle Hutson, a fellow Hall of Famer. The 1931 team went undefeated in the Ohio Conference. Brandy was later noted to be a "real scrapper" on the court.
He was noted to have recorded the longest return of a blocked punt in the nation during the 1931 football season. The return of 37 yards came against Wittenberg.
But Brandy's influence on Heidelberg wasn't limited to athletics. He was active in many activities. He was sports editor of the "Kilikilik" during his last three years. A member of the Student Council as a junior and senior, Brandy was council president in his senior year.
As an employee of the Firestone Tire & Rubber Co., Brandy was instrumental in the recruitment of many outstanding student-athletes from the Akron area.
He remained extremely active in community service throughout his life. He was the recipient of the Silver Beaver award for his contribution to scouting and was voted man of the year by the Conneaut (Ohio) Chamber of Commerce in 1975-76.
He retired in 1974 following a career in the rubber and plastics industry in Connecticut and in Ohio. He currently resides in Platteville, Wis.
