Heidelberg Athletics Hall of Fame
Robert S. Hunt came to Heidelberg College from Tiffin Columbian High School with some impressive credentials, both athletically and academically. At Colurnbian, Hunt was not only a three-year, three-sport letter winner and school record holder in the high hurdles, but was also and senior class president, as well as Student Council member.Â
At Heidelberg, Hunt decided that three sports was a little much and chose to compete in just two, football and track. After two years, in which he set the Heidelberg record in the high hurdles, and scored. a second place finish at the Ohio Athletic Conference Meet, Hunt gave up track to pursue just football.Â
On the football field, Bob Hunt was one of the best running backs in Student Prince history. In the four years that he played, Heidelberg compiled a 26-12 record, including an 11-0 mark and a National Championship in 1972.
As a freshman Hunt rushed for 506 yards as the 'Berg posted a 3-6 seasonal mark. The following year he upped his rushing total to 714 yards, and the Princes reversed their previous year's finish, going 6-3.
The 'Berg put it all together in 1972, and Bob Hunt was a major contributor. A first-team All-OAC performer, Hunt became the first Student Prince back to rush for more than 1,000 yards in a season since 1954, as he totalled 1,116.
Heidelberg slipped to 6-3 the next season, but Bob Hunt continued his excellent play. For the second straight year he was named. first-team All-OAC and was awarded the Mike Gregory Award as the top back in the OAC. Hunt was also chosen to play in the second annual All-Ohio Shrine Bowl in Ohio Stadium. Based on his performance in the Shrine Bowl, HuntÂ
was invited to the Shrine All-Star Game in Miami's Orange Bowl. There he had the privilege of playing with the likes of linebacker Jack Lambert of Kent State and quarterback Mark Harmon of UCLA.Â
Hunt graduated with a bachelor's degree in biology in 1974 and was drafted by the Cleveland Browns. He played part of the year with the Browns before being put on waivers. Over the next two years he spent time with the New England Patriots and Houston Oilers before giving up football.Â
Following his experience in the NFL, Hunt moved into YMCA work and eventually became Executive Director of the Tiffin YMCA. He was partly responsible for the fund raising; design and layout of the present Tiffin facility.Â
Hunt is presently employed at Wickel Cement Products of Tiffin, Bellevue, Clyde and Sandusky as Vice-President and Sales Manager. He also runs his own Networking Marketing business.Â
He and his wife Gay reside in Tiffin with their four children.
