Serving as the Sports Information Director at Heidelberg University from 1990-1998, Dick Edmond led a career focused around telling the sports story of the next generation.  Whether it be at the collegiate or high school level, Edmond’s career was built on his ability to illustrate amateur sports.

Edmond’s career began, and ended, in newspaper journalism.  He was hired in 1965 by the Bucyrus Telegraph Forum and served as its Sports Editor for eight years.  In 1977, Edmond moved to Tiffin where he would serve as Sports Editor of The Advertiser-Tribune from 1977-1985, and again from 1987-1990.  He would return to The Advertiser-Tribune as its Lifestyle Editor shortly before his death in 1998.

During his 20-plus years as Sports Editor, Edmond was a part of several professional organizations.  He was the President of both the Football Writers of America as well as the Sports Writers of Ohio.  As a member of the Downtown Athletic Club in New York City, Edmond voted for the Heisman Trophy, awarded to the nation’s top collegiate football player.

Edmond joined Heidelberg College’s (later University) Athletic Department as its Sports Information Director in 1990.  As a member of the College Sports Information Directors of America (COSIDA), he earned the nation’s top award in Division III sports for his development and publishing of the 1995 Heidelberg Football Media Guide.

In recognition of a lifetime of work in both sports and human-interest writing, Edmond was honored posthumously with induction into the Ohio Professional Sports Writers Hall of Fame in 2001 and the Crawford County Sports Hall of Fame in 2013.  In addition, the press box was dedicated in his honor at Frost-Kalnow Stadium in Tiffin.

Profile written by Dick’s grandson, Kyle Edmond. Kyle is Assistant Director for Strategic Communications at Bowling Green State University
