Reviewing Sam Schubert's accomplishments on the basketball court, and knowing that he was raised on a rural farm setting in Seneca County, conjours up images of a young Sam, in the barn, shooting for hours at a bottomless peach basket nailed to a beam. If this scenario did in fact take place, then every aspiring hardwood player should hightail it to the barn.

Following his graduation from Hopewell-Loudon High School in 1959, Sam enrolled at Heidelberg, where he would eventually graduate from with a liberal arts degree in 1963. During those four years he would earn the reputation as one of the finest "clutch" players in Heidelberg history.

In the four years that Schubert was a member of the Heidelberg basketball team, the high scoring guard led the tricolor to many impressive victories. The Princes most successful season during this four-year span was Schubert's senior year, when he served as a co-captain. That same year, Sam was honored with selection as a second team All-Ohio Conference guard, due in large part to his breaking of two Heidelberg scoring records.

In a game against Marietta, Sam scored 16 points in the final 10 minutes to set the single game scoring mark of 46 points, he also set the Heidelberg single season scoring mark that year. Both records have since been broken, the single season scoring mark in 1981.

When the basketball season ended, Sam Schubert didn't. A member of the tricolor baseball squad from his sophomore to senior year, Sam helped lead Heidelberg to a better than .500 record.

Sam was also very active at Heidelberg when he wasn't involved in athletics. A member of the "H" Association, Schubert was active with the Student Christian Association and in intramurals.

Following his graduation from Heidelberg, Sam spent one year as a teacher and basketball and track coach at Anthony Wayne High School. Since that time he has been at Bellevue High School, a span that has covered the last 25 years. During the last quarter century, Schubert has served as a science teacher, guidance counselor, junior varsity basketball coach, varsity basketball coach, and is presently the athletic director.

Sam and his wife, the former Carol Sours, also a 1963 Heidelberg grad, have two sons: Brian, age 21, and Brad, 19.
