Born and raised in Tiffin, Gene Amlin came to Heidelberg after graduating from Calvert High School in 1949. As a tackle and defensive end for the Berg, Amlin was a member of the 1952 Ohio Athletic Conference Championship team that went 8-1 during the year and outscored its opponents 257-61.

A rugged player who was fast for a big boy, as described in the 1953 football media guide, Amlin stood at 6-1 and weighed 190 pounds. He was perhaps the best all-around blocker on the line during his junior and senior years for the Berg and captained the team during the 1953 season.

After four years at the Berg, where Amlin not only participated in football but student council and the Spanish club as well, he went on to serve two years in the Army. Upon returning to Tiffin, Amlin returned to Heidelberg and earned a bachelor of science degree in mathematics. After passing the professional engineers exam, Amlin was able to obtain registration as a professional engineer in both Ohio and Indiana. He worked for water and wastewater utility plants until his retirement in 1998. He still continues to do consulting work for several former clients.

Amlin and his wife, Ann, have remained active in the community by supporting the United Way, Rotary and Community Service Council in their current hometown of Muncie, Ind. Amlin even served as United Way president for a stint and as chairman of the United Way annual fund drive. Within his profession, Amlin has served as president of the Indiana sections of the American Water Works Association and the Water Pollution Control Association. In 1987, he served on the executive committee of the Water Environment Federation in Washington D.C.

Amlin and Ann raised five children as well, and have celebrated the births of seven grandchildren.
