Heidelberg Athletics Hall of Fame
In the world of baseball, there are closers -- pitchers asked to protect a lead in the final inning -- and then, there was Andy Lowe ’11.
Lowe was something different. Unafraid to take the ball in any situation, he became Heidelberg’s ultimate stopper, entering whenever Head Coach Matt Palm needed the game settled. For most of his career, once Lowe entered the game, he stayed there. In fact, for a nearly three-year span, he did not exit a game after entering it. If Palm needed one out, or 8.1 innings, Lowe was ready -- making him about as close to a bullpen cheat code as a college coach could hope to have.
His resumé reflected that dominance. Lowe was a three-time ABCA All-American, earning Second Team honors in 2010 and Third Team recognition in both 2009 and 2011. He was named the 2010 ABCA Regional Pitcher of the Year, earning All-Region honors three times. Twice, he was selected as the OAC Pitcher of the Year.
By the end of his career, Lowe had rewritten Heidelberg’s bullpen record book. He set program records for career saves (43) and appearances (111) while also finishing among the leaders in wins (18), strikeouts (206), ERA (2.14) and innings pitched (235.2).
He finished his career as the NCAA All-Divisions leader in career saves (43), a record which has since been broken. He remains the all-time leader in career appearances in Division III.
Lowe’s success paralleled that of the team. Thriving in big moments, he helped the Student Princes win the OAC Regular Season and Tournament titles in 2008, 2009 and 2010. Lowe was on the mound in Marietta when the Student Princes won the 2010 NCAA Regional tournament and advanced to the Division III World Series for the first time. Â
His success extended beyond the diamond as well. Lowe was a two-time CoSIDA Academic All-District honoree and earned Academic All-OAC recognition in 2010 and 2011.
Today, Lowe lives in Hudson, Ohio, with his wife, Brianna, and their children, Emerie and Theo. Self-employed as a business owner, he spends much of his free time coaching soccer, skiing and enjoying a good bourbon -- pursuits considerably less stressful than being summoned from the bullpen with a game hanging in the balance.
