Before that, Bryan was a standout on the baseball diamond and gridiron for The 'Berg. As a member of the baseball team he was a team leader and the rifle-armed catcher. He hit clean-up and started almost every game during his final three years at The 'Berg.

On the football field, Bryan was a key player for Paul Hoernemann's squads that won 17 straight games and won conference crowns in 1954 and 1956. He started at safety during the final three years and at quarterback during his junior and senior seasons. He was also the punter and played on kickoffs, kick returns, punt returns, and held for field goals and extra points.

He has remained active in athletics as a coach and sportscaster. His long and distinguished broadcasting career includes earning a Cleveland Television Council Emmy, Greater Cleveland Football Coaches Association Golden Deeds Award, Cleveland Touchdown Club Award of Recognition and Cleveland Area Association of Basketball and Football Official Broadcaster Awards.

He is a member of the Athletic Hall of Fame at Holy Name High School.

In education he received the President's Award of Excellence from former President Gerald Ford and the Statewide Model for Excellence in Environmental Education.

He is married to Elizabeth (Gallagher) Powers and the couple has seven children.
