Heidelberg Athletics Hall of Fame
The 1989-90 women's basketball squad remains without question the best Heidelberg team in its 37-year history. The 'Berg set an abundance of team records that season which still stand today.
February 1990 marked The 'Berg's first and only OAC regular season title followed by the first and only OAC tournament championship. The tournament crown was sealed at Seiberling Gym when Dortha Ford sank two foul shots with one second remaining to top Capital 61-60 in the conference final.
The Tricolor moved on to win the NCAA Atlantic Regional championship and NCAA quarter-finals before capturing a third place at the Division III Final Four.Â
The team's 27-6 record is not only the best in school history, it marks the only time Heidelberg has reached the 20-win plateau. The 2,239 points scored, 1,343 rebounds and .715 free throw percentage are all single-season school records that have yet to be eclipsed.
Head coach Karen McConnell was named OAC Coach of the Year in just her second season at the helm.
Of the 'Berg's 27 wins, 15 came by way of 15 or more point margins. Â Heidelberg also had a midseason stretch of 12 straight victories. Ford led the offensive attack with a single-season record of 585 points. She was joined in the front court by Kathy Musser (15.4 ppg) while Kim
Clippinger, Myndi Hill and defensive weapon Stacey Scudder rounded out the starting five.
Tammy Shaffer and Michelle Kochis were both key players off the bench. Ford and Musser each earned All-OAC honors while Hill broke her own single-season assists record with 129. Scudder, Clippinger and Musser were named to the All-Region team while Ford was a member of the Final Four All-Tournament team.Â
