A ball carrier back in the days when Heidelberg called its players the "Fox-men" (named for their coach Paul "The 'Fox" Hoernemann), Groman's outstanding athletic ability showed in track and basketball as well. As a "Frye-man" (named for basketball coach Marv Frye), Groman was a four-year letterman. He was an all-conference and an all-Ohio selection, he was ranked second in his division in points scored.

A three-year letterman in football, Groman played halfback opposition Walt Livingston in 1956. He later went on to earn Little All-American status. He led the nation in scoring in his senior year.

As a member of the track team, Groman won four letters and established three Heidelberg records, two of which stand today. His 9.7 time in the 100-yard dash stood for more than 20 years before the record was retired when track and field converted to meters in 1978. He still holds the Heidelberg record in the long jump, 23-11 3/4.

Following graduation, Groman played professional football for the Houston Oilers, Denver Broncos and Buffalo Bills for seven seasons, retiring in 1967. A wide receiver, Groman set numerous receiving records, including one for the most touchdown passes caught in a single season. That record of 17 catches remained on the Houston Oilers' books for 23 years until it was broken in 1984 when the team switched to a 16-same season. Groman set the receiving record in 12 games. Groman played a vital role when the Buffalo Bills won back-to- back American Football League championships in 1964 and 1965. He retired following the 1966 season. He has served as a professional scout for the NFL. He also has served as director of player personnel for the Houston Mavericks and New Jersey Generals. Groman currently resides in Houston.
