Box Score 2 BEREA, Ohio - The Heidelberg University baseball team stumbled in a conference doubleheader at Baldwin Wallace on Wednesday and was swept by the Yellow Jackets. Heidelberg fell behind early and dropped the first game 12-3 before being unable to keep pace in the second game, falling 8-3 despite out-hitting the host Yellow Jackets.
Heidelberg moves to 12-14 (4-4 OAC) while BW improved to 11-15 (5-3 OAC).
The Yellow Jackets swarmed early in the first game. After a scoreless first inning, HU starter Steve Huber struck out the first two batters in the second. An infield single and stolen base by Cole Nieto helped BW get on the board. John Taylor singled to center, plating Nieto for a 1-0 lead.
In the third, BW piled on four more runs to take a 5-0 lead. The hosts pounded out five hits in the inning, with the big blow coming on a two-out, two-run double by Nieto.
Heidelberg answered with some offense of their own in the top of the fifth when three two-out hits, capped off by an RBI double off the bat of Alex Manner, got the Berg on the board, still trailing 5-1.
The momentum did not last long for HU, as a two-run homer by the Yellow Jackets extended the score out to 7-1 in the bottom of the fifth.
Baldwin Wallace built their lead out to 10-1 before the top of the 7th, where Manner drove his first career home run, a two-run shot to right field, cutting the deficit to seven.
That would turn out to be all the scoring HU could muster, as they fell by a final score of 12-3.
Huber (2-3) took the loss on the mound after going five innings while giving up 12 hits and nine runs.
Joe Walton led the Berg with three hits while Manner drove in all three runs for the Student Princes in game one.
Game two opened up with the Student Princes gaining an early lead on an RBI single by Derek Hug in the first, but that was short-lived, as BW scored two in the first and one in the second to take the 3-1 edge.
Heidelberg was able to rally in the third and tie up the game when Adam Hershberger hit a two-run single, knotting the score at three.
Despite out-hitting BW 12-9 in the game, HU was unable to scratch across any more runs, while the Yellow Jackets scored two in the third, one in the fourth, and two in the seventh to come away with the sweep.
Sam Ankrom (0-2) took the loss, throwing 5.1 innings while giving up six runs, five earned.
Alex Manner had yet another solid game at the plate with a trio of hits while Hug also had three base hits in the loss.
