Box Score ADRIAN, Mich. – The Heidelberg University baseball team gave up a two-run lead in the ninth inning on Wednesday as they lost at Adrian College by a final score of 14-13. The Student Princes built a 13-5 advantage after the top of the sixth inning, but the host Bulldogs were able to battle all the way back and took full advantage of a Berg pitching staff that allowed 10 walks in the game.
Heidelberg fell to 9-11 with the loss while Adrian improved to 9-5.
The Student Princes jumped ahead early, as an RBI groundout by Clayton Wielinski gave HU a 1-0 lead in the top of the first.
After Adrian was able to regain the lead with two runs in the bottom of the inning, Heidelberg quickly had a rebuttal, scoring six runs in the second inning on three hits and three errors to get out to a 7-2 edge.
The Bulldogs answered yet again when they scored three in the bottom of the second, but the Berg still led 7-5.
Following a scoreless third inning, Derek Hug connected for a two-run home run in the fourth, the 20th home run of his career, putting HU on top 9-5.
RBIs from Joe Walton, Adam Hershberger, and Wielinski extended the Berg lead to 12-5 after the fifth inning, while an RBI single by Joey Wenning stretched the lead to eight (13-5) in the top of the sixth.
That was where things started to go south for Heidelberg, as Adrian went for five runs in the bottom of the sixth on just three hits to get back into the game.
The Bulldogs plated one more in the seventh, but Heidelberg still led by two (13-11) entering the ninth inning.
Adrian would then score three runs to walk-off with the win in the bottom of the ninth, as the Berg was only able to record one out before the Bulldogs completed the comeback.
Steve Huber (2-2) took the loss in relief for the Berg on the mound.
Hershberger and Jacobs led the energized offense for the Berg as they both had three hits and one RBI in the defeat.

Heidelberg will return home for their first conference doubleheader at Peaceful Valley this year. The Student Princes will host Mount Union (9-10, 0-2 OAC) on Saturday, with the first game of the doubleheader scheduled to start at 1:00 p.m.
