Capital defeats women's basketball

TIFFIN – The Heidelberg University women's basketball team lost the penultimate game of the regular season, 59-44, to Capital University on Wednesday. Turnovers and rebounding spelled the difference for the Crusaders, who swept the season series from the Student Princes.

The loss knocked Heidelberg down to 9-15 overall, 7-10 in the Ohio Athletic Conference. Capital, which had spent much of the year in the D3hoops.com Top 25 before falling out this week, improved to 19-5, 12-5 OAC.

With one game remaining, Heidelberg sits in a tie for sixth place, with the top eight teams making the OAC Tournament. Regardless of Saturday's outcome on Senior Day vs. Otterbein, the Student Princes are in the tournament. Their seeding and opponent are yet to be determined.

On a night where shots didn't fall for HU, Carli Patrick was the lone Student Prince in double-figures with 10 points. She picked up a team-high seven boards.

Capital led by as many as six in the first quarter, but a 3-pointer at the horn by Jackie Abrecht made it 12-9 in favor of the visitors.

The Crusaders extended their lead in the second as Heidelberg had six turnovers in a period in which they were outscored 20-9.

Heidelberg stayed within 12-18 points for the entirety of the second half, but never found a rhythm offensively.

Capital outscored Heidelberg 29-9 off of turnovers and held a 13-3 edge in second chance points. The Crusaders won the battle on the glass 43-28.

CAP was led by Kristen Thompson, who had 22 points and 12 rebounds.

NOTES: At halftime, Heidelberg honored 136 fall Landess Scholar-Athlete Award winners – given to student-athletes who earn a 3.0 GPA in the semester of competition. The women's cross country team won the team title with a collective 3.46 GPA in the fall.

UP NEXT: The Student Princes will close out the regular season at home as they welcome Otterbein on Saturday. HU will honor its five seniors – Allie Hawkins, Jackie Abrecht, Nicole Payne, Shelby Dearth and Marisa Liburdi – prior to the 3 p.m. tipoff.
