TIFFIN – The Heidelberg University Women's basketball team closed out its season Saturday afternoon with a matchup against Capital University on Senior Day. Despite battling with grit and determination all four quarters, the Student Princes fell to the Comets, 81-63.
Senior
Maciaha Irving, who missed the season due to injury, had the honor of scoring The Berg's first basket of the afternoon, finishing at the rim to even the score early in the first quarter.
Heidelberg shot nearly 53 percent in the opening quarter and built a 25-20 lead after one. A later three-pointer from
Olivia Nolting gave the Student Princes momentum heading into the second.
The Comets answered in the second quarter, using a scoring run to take a 41-36 lead into halftime. Despite threes from Nolting and
Abby Tier to keep things close, Capital capitalized at the free-throw line to create separation. While their field goal percentage dipped after halftime, Capital made the most of its trips to the line, scoring 21 second-half points at the stripe.
Heidelberg continued to battle in the second half. Nolting led the way with 17 points, while
Tori See recorded 13 points and 10 rebounds for a double-double.
Malia Mizeres added 11 points off the bench, knocking down three triples to spark The Berg in the fourth quarter.
On the season, freshman
Tori See led the Student Princes with a team-high 13.0 points and 7.3 rebounds per game -- finishing in the OAC's top five in both categories.
Malia Mizeres paced the team in assists with 54 while adding 33 steals, and
Mya Jones anchored the defense with a team-best 25 blocks.
