Extra-base hits lift Baseball to win in opener

GRAND PARK, Indiana -- The Heidelberg University Baseball team rallied for a victory on opening day, upending Hope College, 8-6. Sam Schneider broke a 6-6 tie in the top of the ninth with a two-run double, propelling the Student Princes to the win.

Braedy Limke had three of Heidelberg's nine hits, including a two-run home run.

The Berg trailed, 2-0, in the top of the fifth. Thomas McGuire drew a one-out walk and raced home on a triple to the gap in right center by Tyler Fields. Brayden Tucker followed with a single through the left side, tying the game at two.

Carrying the momentum into the sixth, HU struck for two more. Garrett Labeau walked and stole second. He scored on another triple to right center -- this time off the bat of freshman Grant Bomer.  Logan Walpole drove in Bomer with a sacrifice fly.

Hope regained the lead with a three-run outburst in the bottom of the sixth, and carried the 5-4 lead into the seventh.

In the seventh, Limke launched the two-run blast to right -- his 13th career homer. The pesky Dutchmen tied the game with an unearned run in the bottom of the inning.

Still knotted at 6 in the ninth, Schneider delivered a clutch two-out, two-run double down the right field line, plating Tucker and Limke.

Aidan Cummings, who entered the game in the seventh, worked a 1-2-3 ninth and picked up the victory. He went 3.0 innings, allowing one unearned run on three hits. He fanned four.

Starter Jameson Oleson gave up two runs in 5.0 innings, striking out six.

Heidelberg returns to action on Saturday with games against Wartburg and Aurora. The first pitch is scheduled for 11 a.m.
