GRAND PARK, Indiana -- The Heidelberg University Baseball team split a pair of games on Saturday at Grand Park, falling to Wartburg, 4-1, then rallying late for a 5-4 triumph over Aurora. The Student Princes emerged from the opening weekend with a 2-1 record.
Wartburg limited Heidelberg to one run on four hits. One of the hits was a two-out RBI single up the middle by
Jack McKelley that drove in
Max Gutmann with the game's first run. Wartburg touched up the 'Berg bullpen for four runs, scoring twice in the sixth and twice in the ninth.
HU starter
Logan Walpole went five scoreless innings in his first collegiate start. He struck out four.
Against Aurora, the Student Princes trailed 2-0 in the bottom of the third.
Connor Roberts led off with a single and, after a wild pitch, scored from second on a triple by
Brayden Tucker.
Braedy Limke knotted the game with an RBI groundout to short.
The Blue Jays broke the tie in the fourth with a single run, then added one in the sixth.
Down to their final six outs, Heidelberg rallied in the eighth.
Thomas McGuire and Walpole singled to start the inning and Roberts was hit by a pitch to load the bases with one out. A wild pitch allowed McGuire to score, then Tucker bounced a single up the gut, plating two.
In the top of the ninth, Aurora threatened, but stranded a pair.
Starter
Henry Mates worked five innings, allowing three runs on seven hits.
Chris Mathis allowed one unearned run in two innings.
Tyler Verdin earned the victory, throwing two scoreless innings.
Heidelberg is back in action next weekend with three games at VA Memorial Stadium in Chillicothe. HU will battle with Hiram, Albion and Penn St. Behrend.
