Brafford Strikes Out 10 in Win

FORT PIERCE, Florida -- It's a good day to be a Student Prince. The Heidelberg University Baseball team won Friday's matchup against the Alvernia Golden Wolves by a score of 4-2. Pitching was the difference maker, as senior Corey Brafford racked up a career-best 10 strikeouts in his first victory of the season.

Brafford retired five Golden Wolves via the strikeout in the first two innings.

Alvernia struck first on a one out bases-loaded groundout in the third. That was the only run Brafford would concede, as he got the next batter swinging.

HU stormed back in the home half of the inning. Senior Braedy Limke hustled out a single chopped back to the mound, and Garrett LaBeau drew a walk to put two on with one out. Heidelberg's first run came in unorthodox fashion, as Limke bolted for third on a pickoff attempt, and a throwing error by the second baseman allowed Limke to score and LaBeau to scamper to third. Logan Winstead continued his Florida hot streak by poking an RBI single up the middle. Braden Keeney reached safely on a fielding error in the next at bat, and freshman Logan Walpole cleared the bases with a single into right, bringing the score to 4-1.

Brafford went back to work, recording two strikeouts in the fourth and one more in the fifth.

Senior Nicholas Lavelle kept the pressure going, allowing just one run over the final four frames, including striking out the side in the eighth. In the process, Lavelle picked up his first save of the season.

Limke went 3-for-4, and Winstead, Walpole, and Connor Gambino each finished with two hits.

Heidelberg wraps up their Florida excursion Saturday morning, where they'll square off against Earlham College before boarding the plane back to Tiffin. First pitch is scheduled for 10 am.
