TIFFIN – The Heidelberg University Baseball team locked up their first home series win on Saturday, defeating Westminster 4-3.
The Student Princes wasted no time scoring, when, in the bottom of the 1st,
Andrew Pokley crushed a solo home run to left field for a1-0 lead.
After the visiting Titans tied it up in the 2nd, Heidelberg reclaimed the lead in the 5th thanks to the efforts of
Logan Walpole. After a single to right field, he advanced to third on a throwing error. Moments later, he scored on a balk, pushing the score to 2-1.
Westminster would tie it up again in the 7th inning, but the Berg found another score. Braden Keeney got things rolling with a single to center field and advanced to second on Logan Walpole's sacrifice bunt. With two outs, Kyle Krummen stepped up, ripping a single that slipped past the center fielder, while Keeney raced home, and Krummen took second on the fielding error, giving Heidelberg a 3-2 edge.
In the 8th,
Logan Winstead and
Braden Keeney were hit by a pitch, putting two runners on. After a strikeout,
Connor Gambino ripped a single to right field, advancing to second on the throw and driving in Winstead to stretch the lead to 4-2. In the 9th, the visitors would threaten with a run of their own, but
Corbin Caplan shut down the side, securing the series win.
Nicolas Lavelle pitched six strong innings on the mound, allowing just one unearned run on four hits while striking out four. Caplan took over for the final three innings, surrendering two runs, while picking up the win.
The Student Princes return to action on Tuesday, March 18th at 4:00 p.m. against Adrian College in Adrian, Michigan.
