PORT CHARLOTTE, Florida – The Heidelberg University Baseball team ended their annual spring trip with a whimper, falling to Wabash College, 14-6. The loss dropped HU's overall record to 8-4, going 6-3 in the Sunshine State.
While the top of the order struggled on Saturday, the bottom two hitters --
Reece McNeely and
Kyle Mottice -- both collected three hits. McNeely and
Braedy Limke both drove in a pair.
Logan Franz got the start for Heidelberg going four innings, giving up five runs on five hits while striking out two.
The Little Giants took a 2-0 lead with single runs in the second and third innings. .
Reece McNeely led off the bottom half of the third with a double to deep center field.
Kyle Mottice reached on an error, putting runners on second and third with no outs. Limke grounded out to shortstop but it allowed HU to score a run to cut the Student Princes deficit to 2-1 after three.
Wabash responded with 12 runs over the next three innings to take command of the game.
The Student Princes added a run in the bottom of the sixth off an
Andrew Cook sac fly that saw
Aidan Corrigan score.
McNeely started the seventh with a single that was followed by a Mottice single, to give HU two early runners. Limke added a single of his own, scoring McNeely. A
Camden Farley pop-fly to center brought home Mottice for the Berg.
In the eighth, McNeely launched his first home run of the season -- a two-run blast to left.
Heidelberg used five pitchers on the day, with starter
Logan Franz going four innings.
Ben Bliss capped the day on the mount with 3.1 innings of shutout baseball.
