PORT CHARLOTTE, Florida – The Heidelberg University Baseball team split a pair of games today in the Sunshine State. HU falling in game one to Babson, 7-2, then took game two against Kean, 10-7. The Student Princes totaled 19 hits and 12 runs combined on the day.
BABSON 7 HEIDELBERG 2
Corbin Caplan got his second start of the trip, going five innings, giving up five runs on six hits.
Nicolas Lavelle threw two innings, giving up two hits and two runs.
Cameron Chappell threw an inning and did not give up a hit.
Braedy Limke and
Camden Farley tallied two hits apiece in the loss.
Babson got the game started with a two-run home run in the home half of the first, taking the early 2-0 lead. The Beavers added another in the third, stretching their lead to 3-0 after three innings of play.
The Beavers tallied two more runs on two hits in the fifth, to make the score 5-0..
Babson threatened in the sixth, as they had two guys on with one out. Lavelle was able to get the next two batters to pop out, allowing no damage in the inning.
Heidelberg was finally able to get on the board in the seventh inning, when Limke started the inning with an infield single that saw him make it all the way to third thanks to a throwing error from third base.
Aidan Corrigan grounded out to second the next at bat, but that allowed HU to plate a run.
Babson got that run back in the bottom of the inning when Brant Savage hit his second home run of the day. The Beavers added two more, making it 7-1 after seven.
Heidelberg was able to score one more run in the ninth with a bases-loaded walk. But Babson got out of the inning only giving up one run, leading to the 7-2 loss.
HEIDELBERG 10 KEAN 7
Jackson Powers got the start in game two going seven innings for the Berg. He gave up two runs on four hits while fanning eight in the win.
Dylan Matusak,
Justin Wilkins and
Corey Brafford tallied 1.3 innings. They gave up a combined four hits and five runs.
Limke, Farley, McVicker and McNeely all tallied two hits.
Andrew Cook had a team-high three RBI.
Powers found himself in an early hole with the first two batters getting on for Kean. A sac bunt from the Cougars was followed by back-to-back strikeouts to get out of the inning unharmed.
The Berg got off to a quick start offensively as they plated three runs in the first inning. Corrigan laced a one out double to left center, giving HU a runner in scoring position. Farley was able to hit him home the next at bat with a single to left field.
Adam McVicker kept it going with a single, moving Farley to second. Thanks to an obstruction call on the shortstop off a
Thomas Sauer single, McVicker advanced to third and Farley was able to score. An
Andrew Cook sac fly plated another, giving HU the 3-0 lead after one.
Kean got two back in the top of the third, cutting the Student Princes lead to 3-2.
McVicker helped get one of those runs right back the next inning, hitting a solo bomb to right center field to make the score 4-2 heading into the fourth.
Back-to-back walks to start the bottom of the fifth forced Kean to make a pitching change. Farley stayed hot at the plate, hitting one to left field allowing Limke to score. With Runners on second and third and one out, Sauer hit a sac fly to deep center, plating another HU run.
Cook then absolutely obliterated a ball over the left field fence to add to the HU rout, drawing cheers from fans and the public address announcer.
The Student Princes bats were back in the sixth inning when
Reece McNeely got on with a one-out single. A Limke double to right center brought McNeely across the plate, stretching the lead to 9-2.
McVicker took one off the knee for the Berg with bases loaded, bringing in an insurance run for HU.
The Cougars made things interesting in the top of the eighth, scoring four runs to cut their deficit to 10-6. Kean added another in the ninth but it was not enough resulting in the 10-7 win for the Student Princes.
Next up for Heidelberg will be a single game Saturday against Wabash for their final game in Florida before heading back north to Ohio. First pitch is set for 10:30 a.m.
