Baseball sweeps Brits

TIFFIN – The Heidelberg University Baseball team swept the Albion College Britons in a doubleheader on Saturday, 10-9 in game one and 10-6 in game two. The Student Princes tallied a whopping 20 runs and 33 hits combined between the two games. 

Braedy Limke was 7-for-10 at the plate on the day and also tallied three RBI's. Adam McVicker went 4-for-9 at the dish, driving in three runs in the win. Six other Berg batters notched double digit hits on the afternoon. 

Camden Farley hit two home runs on the day, bringing his season total to four.

GAME 1: HEIDELBERG 10-16-0 ALBION 9-11-0

Jackson Powers got the start in game one for Heidelberg. He went four innings, giving up seven runs on six hits. Payton Moser, Orion Kroah, and Corey Brafford totaled 4.3 innings of work, giving up two runs on five hits combined. 

Brafford got the win for Heidelberg bringing his record to 3-1 on the year. 

Camden Farley got Heidelberg on the board first in game one, with a solo bomb to left field, making it 1-0 after one. 

Jackson Powers was in a hole to start the second inning after hitting the lead-off batter and walking another to give the Britons two on with one out. An Albion single over second base tied the game at 1-1. A bases clearing double gave the Britons a 3-1 lead. 

With bases loaded and one out, hot hitting Kyle Mottice came to the dish and cleared the bases with a triple to right center, giving HU the lead back, 4-3. 

The visitors bats helped them get two runs back in the top of the third making it 5-4 Britons. A two-out triple for Albion in the fourth added to their lead.

Reece McNeely started the home half of the fourth with a triple to deep right center. Mottice followed with a sac fly to center, giving HU one run back after four. 

HU stormed back in the fifth as Adam McVicker got the inning started with a double to left field. Thomas Sauer nailed a one out double to the center field warning track, scoring McVicker. Andrew Pokley followed with a double of his own, plating Sauer to tie the game 7-7. 

A sac bunt from McNeely allowed Pokley to move over to third with two outs. Pokley then scored on a passed ball giving the Student Princes the 8-7 advantage. 

Farley laced his second home run of the game over the left field fence to start the sixth, giving HU an insurance run heading into the seventh 

The Britons added two runs in the eighth to tie the game at 9-9. 

A lead-off walk for the Berg in the bottom of the eighth and a balk from the Albion pitcher gave HU a runner in scoring position early.  Sauer came up with one out and singled through the left side to break the tie and give Heidelberg the 10-9 lead. 

The Student Princes shut the Britons down the following inning, giving HU the 10-9 victory.

GAME 2: Heidelberg 10-17-1 Albion 6-10-0

Corbin Caplan was on the hill in game two for the Berg. He went six strong innings, allowing three runs on six hits. Andrew Cook and Vincent Marimpietri pitched 2.3 innings total, giving up four hits combined. 

Caplin pushed his record to 2-2 on the season in the victory. 

McVicker got HU on the board first in game two, singling in Limke to give the home team a 1-0 lead. Albion was able to get the run back in the top of the second, knotting the game 1-1. 

Heidelberg opened the floodgates in the second when McNeely was given a free base, putting a runner on with one out. A Mottice single moved McNeely to third, giving HU runners on the corners. Limke then singled, scoring a run to break the early tie. 

Farley came to the dish with two outs and had a base hit to right field, making way for Mottice to score. McVicker kept the rally going as he singled through the right side. His base knock allowed Limke to score, giving the hosts a 4-1 lead. 

The Student Princes added another run in the third, while Albion's Braeden Emery launched a home run to left field, cutting the HU lead to 5-2 after four.

Heidelberg stretched their lead to four runs in the fifth when Corrigan doubled down the left field line, allowing McNeely to score. 

The Heidelberg bats came back alive in the seventh inning as they plated four more runs in the inning. 

Kyle Krummen got the inning started with a double to deep right center. Limke hit him in with a double of his own, adding an insurance run.. A passed ball from the Albion catcher allowed Limke to score. Sauer came to the plate and hit a triple off the left center field wall, just inches away from a home run and scored another runner. 

Pokley scored Sauer with a single, giving the home squad the 10-3 after seven innings of action. The Britons posted three runs in the eighth to cut the HU lead to just four runs. 

The Student Princes were threatening in the home half of the eighth when the first two batters of the inning got on. But, a triple play from Albion allowed the visitors to get out of the inning unscathed. A double play in the ninth helped lead Heidelberg to the 10-6 victory.

Heidelberg is back at Peaceful Valley on Wednesday as they host Adrian College in a single game. First pitch is set for 4 p.m.
