TIFFIN – The Heidelberg University Baseball team knocked off the Adrian College Bulldogs on Tuesday afternoon, 5-4. With the score knotted at 1-1 in the fourth inning, a
Braedy Limke three-run bomb to right field proved to be the backbreaker for the Bulldogs. An insurance run in the seventh helped HU claim the 5-4 victory.
Heidelberg improved to 12-4 on the season while Adrian slipped to 7-7.
Logan Franz (1-1) got the win in today's game. He went five innings, giving up two runs on six hits.
Dylan Matusak went three innings only giving up two hits and one run.
Corey Brafford earned the first save of the season for Heidelberg.
Braedy Limke was the lone Berg batter to tally two hits on the day which included the critical three-run home run.
Aidan Corrigan,
Reece McNeely, and
Kyle Krummen all added one hit in the win.
Logan Franz found himself in an early jam with runners on the corners and just one out. But he was able to get AJ Miranda to ground into a 5-4-3 double play to end the inning.
Heidelberg was able to score one in the first inning, when Bradey Limke came around to score following a throwing error by the Bulldog pitcher. HU squandered a bases loaded opportunity in the bottom of the second, leaving the score 1-0 after two.
With a Bulldog runner on third and one out,
Thomas Sauer saw him taking a generous lead and fired it to Limke, tagging the runner out. Franz then got the batter to groudout, ending the top of the third unharmed.
Adrian was able to get their first run of the game in the fourth, tying it at one.
After back-to-back walks to
Reece McNeely and
Kyle Krummen, Limke came to the dish and launched a three-run home run over the right field fence, making it 4-1. HU threatened with a few more runners but were unable to score.
Dylan Matusak came in relief in the sixth inning and found himself in a hole with runners on the corners and no outs. He then got the next Bulldog batter to hit into a 6-4-3 double play, only allowing one run to score. Sauer ended the inning by throwing his second runner out trying to steal second.
Another jam in the seventh for Matusak saw Adrian get runners on first and second with no outs. Another ground ball double play from the Student Princes allowed them to get out of the inning.
A bases-loaded two-out walk from Krummen gave HU an insurance run heading into the eighth. Neither team would score in the ninth, setting up The Berg to secure the win in the final frame. The Bulldogs did add another run in the final inning, but yet another double play for the Student Princes -- the fourth of the game -- sealed the victory for the hosts.

Heidelberg is back on Saturday as they travel to Columbus to take on Capital University in a doubleheader for their first conference clash of the year. First pitch of game one is set for 1 p.m.
