BEXLEY, Ohio – Despite
Morgan Altenburger's seventh double-double of the season, the Heidelberg University Women's Basketball team lost on the road, 66-53, at Capital University on Wednesday. The Student Princes were done in by a dreadful second half offensively.
Altenburger finished with 20 points and 11 rebounds. Also in double figures,
Chloe Gilbert added 11 and
Cheyanne Bean had 10 points
Riding the momentum from Saturday's win, the Student Princes started out with an 11-4 lead. As usual,
Amari Slaughter picked up an early 3-pointer to get things started. An 8-2 Capital run through the last five minutes ended in a Comets shot from deep as HU clung on to a 13-12 advantage.
The hosts took their first lead of the game thanks to a pair of free throws early in the second. Later, Capital expanded the gap to seven during an 8-0 run through one minute of play. Heidelberg fought back, finding Altenburger for a 3-pointer at 1:13 to take a one-point advantage. The Comets laid in one more before the half to go ahead 34-33.
Heidelberg struggled from the floor after halftime, shooting 7-for-27. The Comets used a steady attack, led by a double-double from Samaree Perkins. Capital outscored HU in the second half, 31-19.
Altenburger's seven double-doubles are the most in a season by a Student Prince since Maddy Crawford notched 14 in the 2019-20 season.
The Heidelberg women (4-18, 1-14 OAC) return for a 1 p.m. tipoff on Saturday at Mount Union (8-14, 5-10 OAC). Their final two games will both be at home next week.
