ALLIANCE -- In their final road game of the season, the Heidelberg University Women's basketball team fell to Mount Union on Saturday afternoon, 68-58. The Student Princes were able to cut their deficit to just four with under two minutes to play, but the comeback stalled.
Three Berg players were in double-figures.
Emma Keto tallied a team-high 15 points while
Cheyanne Bean added 13 and
Chloe Gilbert notched 11.
The Purple Raiders climbed out to an early 9-4 lead, but HU fought back and went on a 7-0 run to take the 11-9 lead following an
Amari Slaughter shot from distance. One possession later, Slaughter knocked down yet another triple stretching the HU lead to three.
The game was knotted at 16 before Bean knocked down two free throws to take back the lead with 2:15 left in the quarter. Neither team scored again until Mount Union hit a jump shot with 39 seconds left in the quarter, tying the game as time expired.
The second quarter only saw Heidelberg score eight points shooting a woeful 2-of-12 from the field. The hosts were able to capitalize off the poor shooting performance from HU and outscored them, 17-8. MTU took a 35-26 lead into the break.
Mount Union saw their lead grow to 41-28 midway through the third quarter of action. Another 7-0 run from Heidelberg cut their deficit to 41-35 with 3:05 left in the quarter. The Purple Raiders ended the third on a 6-2 run bringing their lead to ten.
Keto caught fire in the fourth. She led Heidelberg's charge with three 3-pointers in a span of 2:17, closing the deficit to four with 1:41 remaining. Unable to corral a rebound on the ensuing Mount possession, HU was forced to start fouling. The hosts made 6-of-7 at the line to seal the win.
Heidelberg returns home for the final two games of the season. HU hosts Baldwin Wallace on Wednesday, starting at 7 p.m.
