Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

WBB falls in hard fought battle with JCU

UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS – Following the postponement of the game on February 1st, the Heidelberg University women's basketball team traveled to John Carroll on Monday to take on the Blue Streaks. A hard fought battle from both teams saw Heidelberg on the wrong end of a 55-50 defeat.

Alyssa Martin led the way for Heidelberg tallying 13 points while also pulling down ten rebounds, tying her season-high. Sequoia Bradley and Hallie Rogers both notched 11 for The Berg in the loss.

The first quarter of action saw Heidelberg in a 9-2 deficit early. The visitors would not be deterred and cut the home squad's lead to one at 11-10 following a nifty move in the paint from Martin with 4:06 on the clock. The Blue Streaks took a 19-16 lead into the second quarter.

Elisha Carter got things started in the second when she drained a 3-pointer to tie the game at 19-19. JCU stormed ahead and led 24-19. The Berg responded, holding JCU scoreless for nearly three minutes and were able to capitalize on offense. Two free throws by Rogers put HU ahead 25-24 -- their first lead of the game.

JCU took the lead back following a Kaelyn Underwood layup with 2:50 left in the first half. The next bucket came at the 1:13 mark when Ashley Ballard leapt out of bounds to push an offensive rebound to Carter who drained a jumper to tie it at 31-31 going into the break.

Heidelberg started the second half cold while the home squad stretched their lead to 35-31 with just 38 seconds coming off the clock. A put-back by Martin off her own miss put HU on the board in the quarter. A John Carroll turnover would lead to a Bradley trey on the other end, giving the Student Princes a 36-35 lead.

The Blue Streaks would close the quarter on a 4-0 run to take a 39-36 lead into the final quarter of play.

The fourth quarter started with a JCU turnover with Carter stepping in front of the pass and going coast-to-coast for two. Unfortunately, the hosts would notch the next few baskets to bring their lead to 46-38 with 7:37 left to play. Heidelberg did not give in and cut the deficit down to three, 46-43, following Martin splitting a pair of free throws.

The Blue Streaks saw their largest lead of the game at eight following a Jaylen Hoffmann 3-pointer with 4:23 remaining. The visitors kept fighting but the home team seemed to have an answer every time, resulting in the 55-50 loss for Heidelberg.

The Heidelberg bench scored 22 of the 50 points for the Tricolor while John Carroll's bench only tallied five.

Heidelberg will be back in action on Wednesday as they will play their final home game of the season, hosting No. 10 Ohio Northern. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m.
