TIFFIN -- Playing with confidence after nearly knocking off John Carroll on Monday, the Heidelberg University women's basketball team competed against No. 11 Ohio Northern on Wednesday. A strong second quarter from the Polar Bears launched them to a 63-47 victory over the Student Princes.
Hallie Rogers led the team in scoring with 14, seven of which came in the second quarter.
Ohio Northern came out strong with two back-to-back 3-pointers, but Heidelberg responded with shots from
Ashley Ballard and Rogers. Later,
Taylor Ratliff sank a trey of her own to take the first 'Berg lead, 10-9.
Both teams matched up well as they went through six lead changes and were knotted 14-14 at the end of the first. HU managed an impressive single turnover compared to the nationally ranked Polar Bears' five.
Four steals boosted an Ohio Northern 18-7 run in the second. Rogers tallied all seven for the Tricolor off of two jumpers, a layup and a free throw. The teams hit the locker rooms with an ONU lead, 32-21.
One minute into the third quarter, Rogers picked up her fourth foul and was sent to the bench. Fortunately,
Sequoia Bradley kept the Heidelberg hopes alive, sinking two consecutive shots from beyond the arc. The Polar Bears maintained their lead by the end of the third, 45-31.
Back in the game, Rogers hit one from deep to open the fourth. Connecting on a pick and roll,
Emma Keto found
Alyssa Martin for a three-point play to bring the lead within nine with under six to go. A final 11-4 run from the Polar Bears wrapped up the Student Princes' fate 63-47.
Martin had seven points, followed by Bradley at six and
Colleen Miller with five.
Ballard led with six on the boards, while Martin and
Cheyanne Bean each pulled down four.
Both teams tallied 18 turnovers, but ONU led in steals, 12-7. Heidelberg's bench outscored Ohio Northern's 11-6. The hosts were outrebounded 42-28.
Heidelberg held Ohio Northern to 5-of-18 from deep, 27.8%, well below their average.
Heidelberg will wrap up the season on Saturday at Marietta. The game, slated for a 4 p.m. start, will begin after the conclusion of the men's game.
