TIFFIN -- Despite a valiant effort, the Heidelberg University Women's Basketball team was unable to rally late in a 82-74 loss to Otterbein University on Saturday afternoon. Three Student Princes finished in double figures, led by an 18-point, 10-rebound performance from
Cheyanne Bean.
Heidelberg slipped to 3-5 overall, 0-3 in the OAC. The Cardinals improved to 3-4, 2-1.
The sides were even through the first six minutes, but Otterbein took control late in the first quarter. The Cardinals closed on an 8-2 run and led 18-12 after one.
In the second quarter, the visitors padded their lead with a 12-2 run over a four-minute stretch. Trailing by as many as 16 in the quarter, HU closed the half on a 7-0 run. Otterbein led, 37-28.
The Cardinals shot 57.1% from the floor in a lopsided third quarter. Leading by as many as 20, Otterbein led 62-45 after three.
Bean played a major role in Heidelberg's fourth quarter comeback, scoring 10 points in the quarter -- eight of which came from the line. Down 15 with less than five minutes left, HU went on a 10-0 run over a 3:24 span. Heidelberg closed to within four, but a long rebound off a missed Otterbein free throw led to a jump ball. The possession arrow favored the Cardinals, who added another point at the line. An open look at a 3-pointer rattled out for HU with 18 seconds left, essentially ending their hope of completing the comeback
