Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Keto provides key to victory

Junior Emma Keto notched a career-high 13 points and five assists

HIRAM -- In the gym where, 10 years ago, Kathleen Phillips had a program-record 40-point performance, the Heidelberg University Women's Basketball team held on for a 68-64 win at Hiram College on Wednesday night.

Emma Keto had a career-high five assists and 13 points, shooting 5-of-7 from the floor.  Morgan Altenburger also had 13 points to go along with 11 rebounds -- her second double-double of the year.

An 8-0 run in the first quarter propelled the Terriers to an early 13-5 lead. Keto hit a jumper and a 3-pointer in the final four minutes of the frame and helped HU close to within 18-14 at the end of the period.

A triple-hit by Amari Slaughter tied the game at 23 with less than eight minutes to play in the half.  After Hiram took a 29-25 lead, a 3-pointer from Chloe Gilbert and a layup by Mya Jones put the Student Princes ahead for the first time since the first shot of the game. As she did in the first, Keto surged late in the second quarter.  She scored the final four points of the half and HU led 39-35.

The Student Princes outscored the Terriers in the third, 22-13.  Elisha Carter opened with a trey and helped HU open up a seven-point lead.  Unsatisfied, Hiram tied the contest with a 7-0 run.  Out of a timeout, the Tricolor responded with a 6-0 spurt to regain momentum.  The Berg closed the period on a 10-0 run and led 61-48 after three.

A Jones layup on the first possession of the fourth quarter extended HU's lead to 15, their largest of the contest. Aided by six 'Berg turnovers, Hiram slowly chipped away at the lead.  Hiram managed to crawl to within three at 67-64, but HU held on for the victory.

Slaughter and Gilbert both finished with 10 points.

The win pushed HU back above .500 at 3-2, and already improved upon last season's win total.

Up next, the Student Princes host Marietta in the first game of the only home Saturday doubleheader of the season.  The women's game will tip at 2 p.m., with the men's game to follow.
