TIFFIN -- The Heidelberg University Women's Basketball team was tripped up in their OAC opener at home against Marietta. The Pioneers opened up a sizable early lead en route to the 87-51 win.
The Student Princes (3-3, 0-1) were led by
Cheyanne Bean, who tallied 13 points – her fourth game of the season in double digits. She was accompanied by
Jewel Persinger, with a career-high nine.
The Pioneers made quick work as they shot out to a 12-0 lead. Halfway through the quarter,
Emma Keto found Bean for a layup to bring the gap within 10. The next possession,
Jewel Persinger drilled her second career 3-pointer immediately after entering the game.
The Student Princes started to find the bottom of the net in the second quarter, scoring 18 points in the frame.. Marietta called a timeout after an 8-0 run from The Berg in just over a minute of gameplay. In the final two minutes,
Mya Jones picked up two quick shots from underneath. Marietta held a 49-28 lead at the half.
Heidelberg struggled from the field in the third, while Marietta shot at a 50% clip. Scoring 20, the Pioneers were sent to the line for nine shots, making up seven of their points. Bean and Persinger contributed to the Berg's seven.
HU kept up with the Pioneers in the fourth, nearly matching them as they scored 16 to their 18.
Chloe Gilbert added five while Jones added on five more. The game came to an end with a Marietta victory, 87-51.
The win was Marietta's eighth-straight over Heidelberg.
Heidelberg heads to Ohio Northern on Wednesday for a 7 p.m. clash with the Polar Bears.
