TIFFIN -- In a rare Sunday matinee, the Heidelberg University Women's Basketball team upended the visiting Defiance Yellow Jackets, 79-65. The Student Princes had three in double figures and had nine players score.
Morgan Altenburger set new career highs with 23 points and 15 rebounds -- her first career double-double.
Heidelberg opened up a lead in the first quarter, boosted by 3-pointers from Altenburger,
Amari Slaughter, and
Elisha Carter. The scrappy Yellow Jackets created turnovers by clogging passing lanes and playing aggressively. Heidelberg led 19-16 after one.
The Student Princes extended their lead to as many as 13 in the second quarter, capitalizing on Defiance mistakes. HU led by nine at the break, 38-29.
The Yellow Jackets whittled the 'Berg lead down to five early in the third, but Heidelberg answered with an 8-0 run. The lead was rebuilt to 14, but a 'Berg scoreless stretch that lasted more than three minutes allowed Defiance to stay within striking distance. Heidelberg led by 11 at the start of the fourth.
As the game ebbed and flowed, Heidelberg's lead remained at 11 with four minutes to play. As they had all game, Defiance scratched their way back into the contest and trailed by seven with 1:58 left.
Out of a timeout, Altenburger drove the lane but left her layup short. She corralled her own rebound, put it back up and in -- scoring a much-needed bucket for the Tricolor. Altenburger's basket and a fast-break layup by
Chloe Gilbert helped Heidelberg ice the game in the closing minutes.
Gilbert and
Elisha Carter each finished with 14 points.
Cheyanne Bean registered eight rebounds.
Defiance was led by a 19-point effort from Kaiya Albert.
Up next, Heidelberg hits the road for the first time on Wednesday. Their game at Wooster is scheduled for a 7 p.m. start.
