Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

WBB shakes slow start, wallops Wooster

WOOSTER -- Scoring their most points in nearly a decade, the Heidelberg University Women's Basketball team improved to 2-1 on the season with a 94-66 win at Wooster on Wednesday. The Student Princes shook off a slow start and averaged more than 2.5 points per minute over the final 35 minutes of the game.

Morgan Altenburger followed up Sunday's 23-point outburst with a 22-point performance. Chloe Gilbert, who ignited the 'Berg offense on Wednesday, added 20. Altenburger and Gilbert are the first 'Berg teammates to score 20 points in the same game since Maddy Crawford had 25 and Brittanie Ulmer had 20 in a 78-74 win at Muskingum in 2020.

Heidelberg hit 13 3-pointers in the game -- their most since knocking down 14 against Muskingum on Feb. 2, 2019.

In a bold strategy, Heidelberg fell behind 8-0 in the first five minutes of the game. Gilbert hit a 3-pointer from the wing, which seemed to provide a sense of relief for the Student Princes. Elisha Carter followed with a 3-pointer on the next possession before Gilbert dialed up another from long range. A few possessions later, Gilbert snuck in front of a Wooster pass in the back court, stole the ball and laid it in -- taking Heidelberg from scoreless and down eight to up one in less than three minutes.

A 7-2 run helped the Fighting Scots end the quarter ahead 17-13.

Looking nothing like the team that couldn't buy a bucket in the first five minutes of the game, Heidelberg scored 34 points in the second -- their best single quarter since the four-period format began in 2016-17. Altenburger was on fire, scoring 10 points in the quarter. Though the lead bounced back and forth, a strong layup by Gilbert in the closing seconds gave HU a 47-46 lead at halftime.

A 10-0 run over a three-minute stretch of the third quarter afforded much-needed breathing room for Heidelberg. The Student Princes outscored hosts in the third, 28-14, and led 75-60.

The offensive onslaught continued in the fourth as Heidelberg worked their reserves into the contest. In all, 10 Student Princes scored.

Amari Slaughter (13) and Cheyanne Bean (10) also finished in double figures. Altenburger had a game-high nine rebounds. Gilbert dished out five assists and Slaughter had four.

As a team, HU shot 47.1% from the floor and 41.9% from beyond the arc.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE:

The 94 points were the most since a 98-91 win over Oberlin in 2013 … First back-to-back wins since Dec. 30, 2019 and Jan. 4, 2020 … The program's previous record for points in a quarter was 33, set in a 93-48 thumping of Manchester on Dec. 30, 2019 … As mentioned, the 13 triple hits were the most since Feb. 2, 2019. In that game, Alyssa Riley set a program record with nine 3-pointers.
