NEW CONCORD -- The Heidelberg University baseball team walked away from a doubleheader at Muskingum with a loss and a tie. HU fell in the first game, 12-1, then rallied to tie the nightcap at 7 with a run in the ninth.
Heidelberg slipped to 10-11-1 overall, 7-10-1 in the standings.
GAME ONE: MUSK 12 BERG 1 (7 innings)
Three consecutive doubles in the third helped the hosts take a 3-0 lead over Heidelberg.
Down 4-0 in the fifth, HU manufactured a run.
Kyle Jenkins was hit by a pitch, then moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by
Robert Hunt. After moving to third on a passed ball, Jenkins scored on a single by
Cayden Rollins.
The new-found 'Berg momentum was short-lived. The Fighting Muskies erupted for eight runs on seven hits in the bottom of the fifth. They would ride the 11-run lead through the seventh, securing the mercy rule.
GAME TWO: BERG 7 MUSK 7 (Final, 9 innings)
Rollins got HU off to a hot start in the nightcap, with a solo homer to left in the top of the first. Muskingum got the run back on a double in the bottom of the inning
After the Muskies plated three in the bottom of the third,
Marc Ochoa led off the fourth with a solo home run to right.
Trailing 5-2 in the fifth, Heidelberg tied it up. Reese McNeely drew a leadoff walk, then stole second. Following a bunt single by Hunt, Doran doubled to left, scoring two. He tied the game on a ground out by Rollins.
Still tied at five in the eighth, Heidelberg took a lead. Ochoa singled, then scored on a double by
Aidan Corrigan.
A pair of two-out RBI singles in the bottom of the eighth gave Muskingum a 7-6 lead.
In the ninth, Doran reached on an infield single and moved to second on an errant throw. A wild pitch and a hit batsman put runners on the corners with one out. Ochoa delivered a game-tying single to left.
After a 1-2-3 ninth, the umpires deemed it was too dark to continue -- halting the game in a 7-7 tie.
