TIFFIN -- Led by a sensational day from third baseman
Deaunte Fleming, the Heidelberg University baseball team got a much-needed sweep on Sunday. HU took two from Muskingum, 17-3 in the opener, and 7-3 in the nightcap. Heidelberg batters rapped out 24 hits on the day, including three home runs.
Heidelberg improved to 12-11-1 overall, 9-10-1 in the standings.
The catalyst was Fleming. The Kettering native had a homer, a triple, two doubles and a single on the day, driving in six.
GAME ONE: BERG 17 MUSK 3 (7 innings)
Heidelberg set the tone early with a three-run first inning.
Cayden Rollins hit a one-out double to left center and scored on a triple to deep right center by
Keaton Mark. With two outs and two on,
Deaunte Fleming launched a triple to straight-away center.
After the Muskies plated a run in the top of the second,
Kyle Jenkins kicked off the bottom of the frame with a solo home run to left field.
Robert Hunt followed with a drag bunt single and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by
Zach Doran. Mark drove in Hunt with a base hit up the middle.
Fleming doubled in
Aidan Corrigan in the third on another hard-hit ball to straight-away center. He scored on a squeeze play bunt by Hunt. Doran wrapped up the scoring in the three-run inning with a sac fly to right that plated
Kyle Jenkins.
In the fifth, The Berg scored nine runs on just three hits -- happily stuffing the basepaths via three walks, two hit-by-pitches, and a fielding error. The big blow of the inning came off the bat of Fleming, who launched the first pitch from reliever Liam Carey into the trees in left field.
The Muskies managed two unearned runs off of reliever
Jackson Armbrecht, but could not stave off the mercy rule.
'Berg starter
Ryan Hackworth (4-1) went six full innings, striking out five. He allowed one run on four hits.
GAME TWO: BERG 7 MUSK 3
The Student Princes carried their offensive momentum into the nightcap. Doran singled up the middle and moved to third on an errant pickoff throw by the catcher. He scored on a single to center by Rollins. Rollins raced to third on a single through the right side by Mark -- diving in just ahead of the throw. After an Ochoa sac fly and a fly out by Corrigan, the Fleming Show continued with an RBI double down the left field line. Smith bounced one through the left side for a run-scoring single, driving in the fourth run of the inning.
After cutting the 'Berg lead in half with a two-run homer in the top of the third, the Muskies gave a run back in the bottom of the fourth. Doran singled to left on an 0-2 pitch, then stole second. As Mark drew the fourth ball for a walk, the catcher Allex Santacroce fired to second to try to pick off Doran. The ball ricocheted into center, which allowed Doran to get to third. As the Muskies lazily got the back to the infield, Doran cleverly dashed for home and scored standing.
The Muskies scored another run off of starter
Brady Knizner in the fifth, but reliever
Zane Mirgon got the final out of the inning with the bases loaded.
Ochoa launched a two-run home run to right in the seventh, providing key insurance runs.
Mirgon (1-1) was exceptional in relief. He worked 4.2 innings of scoreless relief, allowing a mere two hits. He fanned three.
