Walter tallies double-double at Mount

ALLIANCE, Ohio -- The Heidelberg University women's basketball team dropped its fifth straight contest, a 74-53 setback at the University of Mount Union.  'Berg sophomore Bailey Walter picked up her second career double-double in the loss on the road.

The result moved the Student Princes' record to 1-7 while the Purple Raiders improved to 4-4 in the 2021 season.

Walter went 5-6 from the floor and 4-6 from the line to finish with 14 points to go along with a game-high 12 rebounds.

Brooke Beamer led all scorers with 17 points while Karlee Mills added 11 points off the bench.

After falling behind early on Friday, the Student Princes came out as the aggressors on Saturday.  HU took a modest 4-0 lead with buckets from Kirsten Kochel and Walter.  However, a 9-0 run midway through the frame helped Mount Union build a 10-point lead eight minutes in.  An Olivia Lemmon layup before the buzzer cut the Mount lead to nine after one.

The Purple Raiders continued to build its lead throughout the second quarter a little at a time.  Mount outscored the Student Princes in the period, 25-13, and led by 21 at halftime.

Bolstered by four second-chance points from Walter, HU chipped away at the deficit in the early stages of the third.  Three minutes in, HU found themselves down 15.  After yet another Walter put-back, HU trailed by 16 with 5:23 left in the period.  Mount Union, however, would close the third on an 11-2 run and led by 25.

Though the Purple Raider lead would blossom to as many as 29 in the fourth, the Student Princes wouldn't quit.  By the time the final horn had sounded, HU whittled the deficit down to 21.

Mount Union had four players reach double figures, and 12 players found their way into the scoring column.

A night after losing the rebounding battle 50-24, Heidelberg out-rebounded Mount Union, 44-42.  Lemmon had a career high eight boards.

Four games remain in the regular season as teams jockey for seeding in the 10-team OAC Tournament.  Heidelberg and Baldwin Wallace (5-3) will square off next weekend -- in Berea on Friday and in Tiffin on Saturday.
