TIFFIN, Ohio -- Despite 22 points from
Brooke Beamer and 18 points from
Karlee Mills, the Heidelberg University women's basketball team was defeated by Baldwin Wallace 79-65 on Friday evening.
With the loss, Heidelberg slipped to 1-8 while the Yellow Jackets improved to 6-3 in the 2021 season.
Beamer led the scoring efforts of Heidelberg with 22 points -- one point shy of her season best -- on 10-24 from the floor. Making her first career start, Mills registered 18 points for the Tricolor.
Despite being in foul trouble early,
Bailey Walter brought down a team high five rebounds for The 'Berg.
While Heidelberg had scored first, Baldwin Wallace had taken and held the lead early in the first quarter, leading 6-2 four minutes into the contest.
The Student Princes would swing the momentum of the game in their favor midway through the quarter with a
Bailey Walter layup to tie the game at 6-6. The play was followed by a Beamer steal and score just 14 seconds later to give The Berg the lead and an energized bench. The play capped off a 6-0 run for the home team.
Heidelberg's high energy play helped the home team keep the lead the rest of the quarter in a close battle 15-12 after 10 minutes of competition.
The Student Princes started the second quarter with an 8-3 run to take a 23-15 lead four minutes into the frame.
BW reeled the Student Princes back in with a 14-2 run and headed into halftime with a 33-31 lead. The run lasted almost four minutes and was aided by foul trouble by the Student Princes. The Yellow Jackets were 11-13 from the line in the period.
An 8-0 run in the third quarter gave the Yellow Jackets a 12-point lead over Heidelberg halfway through the third. The Student Princes went cold from the floor in the quarter, hitting 5-17 (29.4%). The visitors finished the quarter with a 59-47 lead.
The fourth quarter was better for Heidelberg, but not enough to recover from the third-quarter deficit. BW tried to pad their advantage, but the Student Princes remained competitive for the final 10 minutes.
Heidelberg struggled to match up with reigning OAC Player of the Week, Lilly Edwards. Edwards had game highs with 24 points and 13 rebounds.
A total of 11 players scored at least two points for Heidelberg.
Both teams struggled with perimeter shooting. HU hit 3-13 from beyond the arc. The lone made 3-pointer in 16 attempts for BW was the start of a four-point play by Regan Schill.
The two sides face each other again on Saturday. Tipoff in Berea is slated for 6 p.m.
