UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS, Ohio -- A frantic comeback for the Heidelberg University women's basketball team came up just short in a 49-46 loss to Case Western Reserve University on the second day of the John Carroll University Tip Off Tournament. The Student Princes held the Spartans scoreless for the final 9:03 of the game, but drew front iron on a potential game-tying 3-pointer at the final buzzer.
Heidelberg slipped to 1-2 on the season. Case Western Reserve improved to 1-1.
Down 49-31 early in the fourth,
Lily Sweeney ignited the quarter-long 15-0 run with a 3-pointer from the left wing off a pass from
Melanie Koenig. Koenig added a jumper in the paint a few minutes later. With less than 3:30 to play,
Taylor Ratliff hit a 3-pointer from nearly an identical spot on the floor as Sweeney's that cut the deficit to 10. Ratliff hit a free throw and made a layup off a steal that put HU down 49-42 with 1:47 left.
After forcing yet another turnover -- one of nine for CWRU in the period --
Bailey Walter grabbed an offensive board and hit a layup with 54 seconds left. Behind by five, HU fouled with 35 seconds left. A turnover on the inbound gave the ball back to HU.
Alyssa Martin hit a layup off a fantastic feed from Koenig -- making it 49-46 with 18 seconds left.
Trying to knife through a tenacious 'Berg press, the Spartans turned the ball over trying to pass it into the front court. After a timeout with less than three seconds left, Ratliff hoisted a 40-footer at the horn that ricocheted off the rim.
Walter finished with a team-high 15 points and eight rebounds -- six of which came on the offensive glass. Ratliff had eight points off the bench.
Abbey Lawrence had a game-high 16 points for the Spartans.
Heidelberg returns to action on Wednesday with a trip to Albion College. Game time with the Britons is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
