Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

WBB slips on the road at JCU

Quick Synopsis
University Heights, Ohio -- A 25-point outburst in the fourth quarter was not enough for the Heidelberg University women's basketball team in their first road game of the season.  The Student Princes fell to John Carroll University, 78-56, and dropped to 0-2 on the season.

Key Players
Freshman Kalie Rettos reached double figures for the second straight game, tallying a team-high 11 points.
Sadie Chaney and Brooke Beamer, a pair of seniors, each contributed nine points.  Beamer notched a team-high four assists.

Full Recap
John Carroll (2-0) successfully implemented a press and forced the Student Princes into a number of turnovers in the early going.  The Blue Streaks converted the takeaways into points and built a sizable lead in the early stages of the contest.

Despite trailing 16-4 after the opening frame, Heidelberg settled into the game in the second quarter.  Although the JCU lead blossomed to 19 at halftime, The Berg seemed to have settled into the offensive flow of the contest.

Still trailing in the fourth quarter, Heidelberg Head Coach Rachel Ferri was able to tinker with the HU lineup.  The results were promising, as HU outscored the hosts 25-19 in the final ten minutes of the contest.
Three Takeaways
1. As COVID-19 has changed all aspects of society, it has also thrown in an interesting wrinkle into the OAC Basketball world.  In standard years, teams go weeks after their first meeting before squaring off once more.  This year, with the home-and-home series being played on consecutive days, teams have less than 24 hours to regroup from Friday night.  HU scored more points and allowed fewer points than they did on Friday.

2. After a rough patch early, the Tricolor did a better job taking care of the basketball -- committing 11 fewer turnovers than they did on Friday.

3. Heidelberg's high-intensity defensive pressure in the back court has helped create 19 turnovers in each of the first two contests.

Inside the Box Score
Bolstered by 15 offensive boards, Heidelberg earned a 19-6 edge in second-chance points.

JCU relied heavily on Nicole Heffington, as the senior scored 20 points and tallied 11 rebounds in the victorious effort.

Up Next
Heidelberg will take the week to regroup and to prepare for a weekend series with Capital University.  Capital -- which did not play on opening weekend because of COVID-19 protocols --  will host Friday, then trek to Tiffin on Saturday.
