Full Recap
Heidelberg held its own for much of the first quarter.
Taylor Reppart drove the lane and hit a contested layup, cutting the HU deficit to four with just under a minute to play in the opening frame. JCU, playing for their new coach Beth Andrews, closed on a 5-0 run and carried the momentum into the second quarter.
It seemed as though the Blue Streaks could do no wrong in the second quarter. The visitors built up a 21-point lead.
The second half saw the Student Princes' woes on the offensive end continue. HU scored 18 points in the final two quarters.
Three Takeaways
1. Heidelberg was able to get lots of minutes for new contributors, Cara Smith tallied two steals and three points in 18 minutes. Rettos led the scoring effort for Heidelberg with 24 minutes on the court. Reppart recorded five points and one board in 15 minutes.
Olivia Lemmon collected four rebounds and one steal in 12 minutes.
2. JCU won the rebounding edge by the narrowest of margins, 38-37. HU had 16 offensive boards.
3. A new coach with a new system, a new playing environment and restraints on practices all played a role in the loss … but the two biggest factors were an off-night shooting and unforced turnovers -- perhaps opening-night jitters.
