NEW CONCORD -- For about 23 minutes of basketball, the Heidelberg University women's basketball team seemed to be toast. Trailing by 18 with seven minutes left to play in the third quarter, the Student Princes sprang to life with a 13-0 run -- and eventually knocked off host Muskingum University in overtime, 78-74.
Quarter by quarter, the Student Princes shot percentage improved -- starting with a dismal 21.1 percent in the first frame and finishing with a 60.0 percent mark in overtime.
Maddy Crawford had game highs with 25 points and 17 rebounds. In doing so, she picked up her 12th double-double of the season, 36th of her career.
Brittanie Ulmer finished with 20 points, including four 3-pointers. Her second triple of the game, which came as part of the critical 13-0 run, gave her 163 for her career -- setting a Heidelberg record.
Brooke Beamer had 14 points, six steals and five assists for the game, with 10 of her points coming in the fourth quarter.
Alli Adelsperger was the fourth Student Prince in double figures. She finished with 12 points, including two massive 3-pointers late in the game.
Heidelberg improved to 8-13 overall, 4-10 in the OAC. The Muskies fell to 3-16, 1-13.
Though the 13-0 run brought the Student Princes back from the dead, the Muskies still enjoyed an eight-point lead with less than four minutes remaining.
Down 61-53, Ulmer and Adelsperger stepped into back-to-back 3-pointers that brought HU to within two. After a Muskie bucket, Crawford hit two free throws. Following a quick steal by Ulmer, Beamer was fouled with 1:35 to play. Beamer calmly sank the pair, tying the game at 63.
There, the teams traded a few fruitless possessions until Emily Yeager found a seam in the 'Berg defense and made a layup with 21 seconds to play. Out of a timeout, the Student Princes moved the ball around the perimeter, then on to the block where Crawford banked in the equalizer. Muskingum's chance for a game-winner was thwarted by smothering defense.
The hosts led by as many as three in overtime, but two key players -- Sarah Miller and Camay Baylock fouled out, leaving Muskingum with six healthy players.
Down 71-68, Adelsperger buried a 3-pointer to tie the game. After a stop, Crawford made a layup that gave the Tricolor its first lead of the contest -- a mere 43 minutes after the opening tip.
Olivia Lang split a pair at the line, cutting Heidelberg's lead in half.
On the ensuing Berg possession, Ulmer drilled a 3-pointer from the corner to give HU a 76-72 lead. Now with 165 3-pointers, Ulmer broke the record of 162 set by Liza Simrell in 2000-04.
Heidelberg added two more points on a pair at the line by Adelsperger, and were keen to let Lang score an uncontested layup in the waning seconds.
Lang led the Muskies with 24 points, and was one of four in double figures. The hosts turned the ball over 23 times.
The Student Princes return to action on Wednesday as they visit Capital University. Tipoff in Bexley is scheduled for 7 p.m.
