Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Student Princes fall to JCU

TIFFIN -- On what seemed like a bit of a flustered outing, the Heidelberg University women's basketball team fell to John Carroll University by a final score of 61-42 on Wednesday evening.

Heidelberg (7-13, 3-10 OAC) were led in the scoring column by Brooek Beamer's eight points. Brittanie Ulmer added seven, while Tylese Noble contributed four bench points for The Berg. Maddy Crawford led all rebounders with nine boards. Beamer also had four steals in the game.

A frantic first quarter came to a close with the Blue Streaks (18-2, 12-1) holding a 20-8 lead. The Student Princes dug a hole for themselves with six turnovers and JCU did not hesitate to capitalize on the free possessions, scoring 10 of their points immediately after a turnover. HU did do well to force five John Carroll turnovers, but only converted just two points from the changes of possession.

JCU continued to break The Berg's up-tempo defense shooting an efficient 50% from the floor, extending their lead to 38-18 at the halftime intermission.

Two hustle plays led to points for the Student Princes in the second quarter. The first came on a missed 3-pointer, when Alex Carter swooped in and stole an offensive rebound and converted a layup. The second was courtesy of great team defense. Two Student Prince defenders swarmed Nicole Heffington and led to Alli Adelsperger picking off a desperation pass and scooping in a layup of her own.

In the third quarter, Heidelberg played stout defense, limiting John Carroll to just eight shot attempts. However, the Blue Streaks converted five of those attempts, leading to a swift 13 points. The Student Princes managed six successful buckets in the frame on 46% shooting, but could only match the Blue Streaks' 13 points for the quarter.

John Carroll hung on through the fourth to keep the Student Princes at bay by converting 35% of their shot attempts. The Student Princes mustered just 20% as they saw more of the ball in the quarter. HU did manage to outscore the Blue Streaks 11-10 in the frame. In just the fourth quarter alone, HU managed 16 rebounds, including nine on the offensive end of the floor.

In total, John Carroll shot 47% from the floor compared to just 27% from Heidelberg. Additionally, John Carroll played excellent perimeter defense, limited HU to a meager 12% from beyond the arc. Brittanie Ulmer and Leah Bouillon accounted for the lone 3-pointers.

John Carroll was paced by a 16-point performance from Nicole Heffington. Olivia Nagy also chipped in 12 points and added six blocks.

In the game, Heidelberg honored Breast Cancer Awareness by wearing pinking accents and pink warm-up shirts. JCU matched the theme wearing their "Pink Out" warm-ups as well.

Heidelberg will hit the road with the men on Saturday as they travel to Muskingum for a doubleheader. The women will tip at 2 p.m. and the men will follow at approximately 4 p.m.
