Heidelberg looks to move to 3-0 this week vs. Capital

AFTER WEEK TWO ...

The Heidelberg University football team took care of business against a very tough OAC opponent in Wilmington College by a final score of 35-10.

Offensively, the Student Princes fed the hot hand as Branden Short totaled 36 rushing attempts for 187 yards and two touchdowns on the day. Quarterback Jimmy Gephart passed for 175 yards and a touchdown. Gephart also rushed for 32 yards and a score. Receiving, Maceo Matthews hauled in three catches for 137 yards and two touchdowns. The second of Matthews' scores came on a 73-yard pass from Wendell Morrison. Furthermore, freshman kicker Branden Steckel was 5-for-5 on PAT attempts.

Defensively, three different Berg players tallied an interception, including a third of the year from Tramon Wiley. Jacob Gerlak and Loren Sauve also recorded their first career picks. Zach Blackiston racked up 10 tackles on the defensive end of the ball.

For the opponent, Wilmington attempted to throw 52 times as Kyle Barrett amassed 333 yards in the air, but only connected on one touchdown pass. Itika Wynn Jr. was a favorite target for Barrett as he tallied 12 catches and 154 yards. The lone touchdown was a pass to Ace Taylor. Defensively, Ameer Jackson collected 15 tackles, while Tre'Quez Parks intercepted Jimmy Gephart once.

AROUND THE LEAGUE ...
In week two, OAC play commenced with eight of 10 teams in action -- Mount Union and John Carroll took their bye week.

Heidelberg was the lone team to defend home field as they took care of Wilmington 35-10. Branden Short rushed for 187 yards and two scores for the Student Prince offense, while Maceo Matthews caught three passes for 137 yards and two touchdowns.

Ohio Northern defeated Muskingum on the road by a final score of 39-10. Anthony McFadden passed for 280 yards and four touchdowns, all of which were to Austin Eick.

Baldwin Wallace stormed past Otterbein 45-28. Dominick Bowman and Jack Bauer each recorded a pick-six for the Yellow Jackets. Bowman had a second interception in the game as well.

Marietta nearly kept Capital out of the scoring column, winning 44-7. Tanner Clark rushed for 107 yards and two touchdowns for the Pioneers.

In week three, all 10 schools will be action. Mount Union hosts Baldwin Wallace at 1:30 p.m. Otterbein welcomes John Carroll and Wilmington plays home to Ohio Northern at 2 p.m. Under the Saturday night lights, Muskingum travels to Marietta and Capital visits Heidelberg for a 7 p.m. kickoff.

BRAVE-HART
• Senior QB Jimmy Gephart's third start, while not quite as explosive as his first two, yielded another 'Berg victory
• Gephart is the first QB to go 3-0 in his first three starts since at least the 2000 season

• Junior WR Maceo Matthews had his third straight multi-touchdown day
• In last three games, Matthews has 431y and seven TD grabs

THE BIG SHORT
• Junior RB Branden Short set career highs for carries (36), yards (187) and touchdowns (2)
• Short has three career 100+yd games

ROOKIE OF THE YEARBY
• Freshman RB/KR Tayy Yearby had another long return -- and nearly took it to the house
• The Florida native is averaging 73.5 yards per return

BLACK-ISTON SHEEP
• Sophomore DL/LB Zach Blackiston led the team with 10 tackles against Wilmington
• Blackiston has a sack in nine of his 12 games in college

TOMMY BOY-KIN
• DB Chris Boykin earned the team's special teams player of the week award after amassing four tackles on kick/punt coverage
• Boykin also tallied his first career sack

TRA-MONEYBALL
• CB Tramon Wiley -- who switched over to defense this summer -- has interceptions in both games this season
• Wiley is seventh in the nation with 1.5 interceptions per game

TOP GUN
• QB Wendell Morrison was credited with two very different completions on Saturday
• The first was a pop-pass to Yearby for a one-yard loss ... The second was a 73- yard missile to Matthews

INterCEPTION
• Through two games, the Student Princes have five interceptions -- tops in the OAC

LAST TIME vs. CAP
• Berg won despite four fumbles and many personal fouls
• Trace Reynolds tallied 425 yards of total offense
• HU took the lead with 4:28 left
