CLEVELAND -- At the end of a long week, the Heidelberg University baseball team seemed out of sorts in an 8-1 loss to Case Western Reserve University on Saturday. Originally scheduled to be played in Tiffin, overnight rains forced the game to Nobby's Ballpark at CWRU. The Spartans jumped out to a big lead and cruised to the win.

Heidelberg only tallied seven hits off of CWRU pitching -- led by two-hit efforts from Kane Bateman and Tyler Smith.

On a day when Head Coach Chad Fitzgerald planned to use the whole staff, The Berg allowed four runs in the bottom of the first.

Cayden Rollins, who relieved Mac Spears in the first, kept the Student Princes in the ballgame by keeping the hosts off the scoreboard while the offense tried to break through.

In the top of the sixth, Bateman singled to start. Kyle Jenkins followed with a double down the left field line. On the play, Bateman scored when the left fielder mishandled the ball. Marc Ochoa was hit by a pitch and Parker Fronk walked, loading the bases. With the tying run on first, though, Spartans starter Nick Denove ended the threat with a strike out and a fly out.

Case Western Reserve added a pair of runs in the bottom of both the sixth and the seventh.

Rollins went 5.0 innings out of the bullpen and allowed two runs on four hits. Spears, Brady Knizner and Alec Zoeller all logged 0.2 innings while Ryan Keane threw a scoreless frame.

Denove went six full innings for the Spartans, allowing the one run on three hits. Scott Kutschke picked up a three-inning save, allowing four hits and no runs. Rocco Maue and Jacob Kucia each had three of the 15 hits by Case.

Heidelberg will return to action on Tuesday as they host Ohio Wesleyan for a 4 p.m. single game at Peaceful Valley.
