Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Double-doubles by Beamer and Crawford not enough at Bluffton

BLUFFTON -- A strong fourth quarter comeback by the hosts, Bluffton University, led to a 70-65 loss for the Heidelberg University women's basketball team on Tuesday evening.

The loss dropped the Student Princes to 2-2 on the young season, while Bluffton improved to 4-0.

Brooke Beamer led the Student Princes behind her first career double-double as the junior point guard tallied 22 points and a career-best 10 rebounds. To go with her double-figures, Beamer chipped in six assists and a steal.

To pair with Beamer's first, Maddy Crawford tallied the 27th double-double of her career with 11 points and 14 boards. Crawford also stuffed the box score with two blocks, two assists and four steals.

Brittanie Ulmer was the only other Berg player to hit double-figures with 10 points. Furthermore, Ulmer had a career-high five blocks. Bailey Walter had a strong showing in her first collegiate start with six points and eight rebounds.

Starting the game, the Student Princes built a seven point lead before the Beavers even scored. Four different Berg players contributed points over the run. HU held onto the lead until Kylie Brock converted a layup with 36 seconds left to give Bluffton a 15-14 lead. Another layup as time expired in the first quarter pushed the Beavers lead to three at the first break.

In the second period, it didn't take long for The Berg to get their offense going as they benefited from a 10-point swing in just 4:33 of game time. In the favorable run, Brooke Beamer had four points, while Maddy Crawford, Hannah Kilps, and Bailey Walter each added a bucket.

As time ticked away, the Beavers eventually cut the five point deficit once again, taking a late one point lead on a pair of free throws from Emma Saltzman. However, a layup from Crawford with five seconds remaining gave Heidelberg a 31-30 lead at the intermission.

In the second half, the Student Princes outscored Bluffton 14-11 through the third and started sharply in the fourth.

However, Bluffton closed out the final 3:37 with the lead, pulling away from the Berg and closing out the game with the 70-65 victory. The final six points for Heidelberg came courtesy of two free throws from Ulmer, a layup from Beamer and a tip-in from Alex Carter

With Heidelberg down just three with 31 seconds remaining in the fourth, Bluffton was whistled for a foul on the rebound. In the ensuing scrum on the floor, Carter was called for a foul as well, which gave the Beavers two free throws and possession. With that added boost, they were able to close out the game.

Across the game, Bluffton held a slightly better 36% shooting percentage compared to the Berg's 35%. The difference was Bluffton's 20% from three, while HU only mustered 11% from deep.

Defensively, Heidelberg held the advantage in rebounds (51-39), steals (8-7), and blocks (9-2).

Bluffton was led by 22 points from Brianna Gillig, which included a crisp 10-of-13 from the charity stripe. T.J. Mills contributed 14 points as well for the hosts. Gillig was also the leading rebounder with nine.

The Student Princes will take the week off of gameplay for Thanksgiving before returning to the hardwood on Monday, December 2nd away to Baldwin Wallace. Tipoff in Berea is scheduled for 7 p.m.
