Berg falters in conference opener

BEREA -- The Heidelberg University women's basketball team tipped off play within the Ohio Athletic Conference with a road contest at No. 22 Baldwin Wallace University on Monday evening. The game ended in favor of the Yellow Jackets via a 67-55 score.

Behind a new career-high 25 points from Brooke Beamer, the Student Princes (2-3, 0-1 OAC) stormed back from a lengthy deficit and grabbed a 48-47 lead just 45 seconds into the fourth quarter. A three-point-play from Alli Adelsperger allowed Heidelberg to grab their only lead of the contest.

Unfortunately for HU, the lead change and costly turnovers late on from the Student Princes reignited what had been a dormant BW offense, who finished the game on a 20-7 run that helped push them to a perfect 5-0, 1-0 start to the season.

Along with her career night shooting the ball, Beamer added team-highs in rebounds (6) and assists (5). Helping to balance out the offense were Brittanie Ulmer (8 points, 6 rebounds), Alli Adelsperger (7 points), and Maddy Crawford (6 points, 6 rebounds, 3 blocks).

The hosts garnered the game's first nine points, but The Berg got on the board off a step-back jumper from Brittanie Ulmer. Following the Ulmer bucket, Heidelberg stayed step-for-step with the Yellow Jackets and closed the quarter, matching BW's 11 points to trail by just nine at the first break.

Across the second and third quarters, Heidelberg gained ground on BW, outscoring the hosts 34-27 in the two quarters.

Early in the second frame, BW extended their lead to as many as 11, but a near balanced offense that featured points from seven different players in the quarter closed to just a six point lead at the half.

In the third, eight points from Beamer, and baskets from Ulmer, Crawford and Kirsten Kochel set up what would be an exciting fourth, with the score 47-45 in favor of the hosts at the final intermission.

In just 45 seconds of play, Adelsperger's three-point play pushed the Student Princes into the lead for the only point in the game, and were pushing to keep the pressure up. However, the lead change served as a wake-up call for the nationally ranked Yellow Jackets who showed their quality and capitalized on costly Heidelberg turnovers and ran out with the 67-55 win.

Across the game, BW held advantages in rebounding, assists, and steals that carried them. They were led in the box score by Kara Marshall's 16 points and heavily supported by Riley Schill's 15 points and Lily Edwards' 12 points. Hannah Fecht was the game's leading rebounder with seven boards.

The Student Princes will return home for a three-game homestand that begins this Saturday with a 3 p.m. game vs. Wilmington. The game will be aired live on WTTF AM 1600 & 93.3 FM or at www.wttf.com.
