FULL GAME NOTES (PDF)

A LOOK BACK AT LAST WEEK

Facing their second top-10 team of the season, the Heidelberg University football team narrowly fell by a final score of 17-13 at the hands of John Carroll University.

On the offensive end of the field, Jimmy Gephart threw for 17 completions, 201 yards and a touchdown. Maceo Matthews accounted for the lone receiving touchdown. Keivon Belcher caught five passes for 63 yards, while Nick Cofer had three catches for 61 yards. On the ground, Jace Grossman was the leading rusher with 84 yards. Tayy Yearby was held to a meek 24 yards.

Defensively, Zach Blackiston had nine total tackles and Elijah Brechbill had eight. The Berg defense picked off JCU quarterback Jake Floriea four times in the second half. Brechbill had two, Jayden Stanton and Tramon Wiley each had one. Stanton accounted for the lone sack on the day.

Branden Steckel was two-for-two on field goals and good on his one PAT.

For the Blue Streaks, Floriea passed for 238 yards, including nine completions to Evan Nugent for 138 yards. Michael Canganelli rushed for 154 yards on 37 attempts and two touchdowns. Three defenders totaled eight tackles each — Brian Robinson, Luke Brown, and Conner Bogard.

AROUND THE LEAGUE
John Carroll used a late touchdown score by Michael Canganelli to edge Heidelberg 17-13. Canganelli accounted for JCU's other touchdown and rushed for 154 yards on the day.

Mount Union took care of Muskingum 51-3 at home. Josh Petruccelli and DeAndre Parker each rushed for two touchdowns for the Purple Raiders.

Ohio Northern edged Baldwin Wallace 35-28. Anthony McFadden passed for 155 yards and three scores. McFadden also rushed for a touchdown.

Wilmington staved off late Capital pressure and held on for a 41-34 victory. Kyle Barrett passed for 285 yards and five touchdowns for Wilmington.

Marietta defeated Otterbein by a final of 21-10. James Knox recovered a blocked field goal attempt and returned it for an 84-yard touchdown that all but sealed the win for the Pioneers.

In the final week of the regular season, all five games will kickoff at 1:30 p.m. Marietta hosts Mount Union, Muskingum travels to Capital, Ohio Northern welcomes Heidelberg for the Bendekovic Bowl, Baldwin Wallace plays home to cross-town rival John Carroll, and Wilmington visits Otterbein.

GEPHART
• Senior QB Jimmy Gephart has ten career starts and is 7-3
• Against JCU, Gephart was 17-of-40 for 201 yards and a touchdown
• With 26 TD passes on the season, Gephart is two shy of tying the HU season record (Michael Mees, 28 in 2014)

YEARBY
• Freshman RB Tayy Yearby needs 139 yards to eclipse the 1,000-yard mark for the year
• Yearby has five multi-touchdown games this season

MATTHEWS
• Junior WR Maceo Matthews has 10 TD receptions this season, tied for fifth-most in program history (Record is held by Mike Preston, 15 in 2010)
• Matthews has at least one TD grab in each game he has played in this season

WILEY
• CB Tramon Wiley -- a former WR who switched over to defense this summer -- leads the OAC with six interceptions
• Wiley would need three picks to tie Adam Smith for the single-season record of nine set in 1994

STECKEL
• With nine field goals on the year, freshman K Branden Steckel is second in the conference in scoring and third in accuracy
• Jesse Hawkins holds the record for field goals in a season with 14, set in 2007
• With 45 extra points, Steckel is already tied for fourth on the single season list (Stephen Smith, 58 in 2014)

INTERCEPTIONS
• HU leads the conference with 16 interceptions
• The school record for picks in a season is 23, set in 2011

THE BENDO BOWL REDUX
• Nine years ago, ONU HC Dean Paul and then HU HC Mike Hallett created the Bendekovic Bowl to honor the lives of Ronnie and Jason Bendekovic, sadly cut short by a genetic blood clot disorder
• Ronnie was an assistant at ONU at the time of his passing in 2005. Jason worked at Heidelberg when he passed away in 2010.
• Since its inception in 2011, Heidelberg has won seven of eight

"YOU PLAYED BALL WITH A POLAR BEAR!"
• The wind wreaked havoc as Heidelberg beat ONU, 49-17 to close out the season
• Russell Ramsey covered up an ONU punt that blew back into the Polar Bear end zone for a TD
• In his first collegiate start, Jimmy Gephart was 22-of-28 for 276 yards and four touchdowns
• Anthony McFadden and Christiaan Williams did not play
