DEFIANCE -- The bats stayed hot for the Heidelberg University baseball team in a 16-5 rout of host Defiance College on Sunday. Mr. Grand Slam, Evan Long, highlighted the victory with his fourth career four-run homer. Coupled with Saturday's wins, Heidelberg went 3-0 on the weekend and outscored opponents 52-13.

Heidelberg improved to 23-13 while the Yellow Jackets dropped to 12-18.

Long had three hits and seven RBI on the day, while Joey Rydzewski tallied three hits and three RBI.

The Berg jumped ahead quickly. Rydzewski slapped an opposite field double and scored on a base hit by Long in the first.

Starter Sam Ankrom fanned 10 in 5.0 innings of work. He worked out of a bases-loaded jam in the first by striking out the final two batters of the inning.

Ankrom's perseverance seemed to ignite the Heidelberg offense. With one out and the bases loaded in the second, Rydzrewski delivered a two-run single, scoring Parker Fronk and the cheeseburger king Kyle Jenkins. Long followed with another RBI single to score Marc Ochoa. A bunt single by Matt Psychas plated one and chased the Defiance starter from the game. A two-out single by Darrin Shirk and a double by Phil Frazier each drove in another run. In all, HU scored six times and lead 7-0.

After two DC errors gifted The Berg a run in the third, Heidelberg put up a six-spot in the fourth -- all coming with two outs. Two walks were followed by an RBI single by Jenkins. Rydzewski drove in another with a bouncer up the middle, which loaded the bases. Long followed with a grand slam to right.

The hosts scored twice off Ankrom in the fourth, but Heidelberg matched it in the fifth. Frazier was hit by a pitch and moved to second on a single by Fronk. Jenkins contributed another RBI single through the right side to drive in Frazier. Fronk would score HU's 16th run on a wild pitch.

From there, head coach Chad Fitzgerald was able to extend at bats and pitching opportunities to many reserves. In all, 27 players saw action for the Tricolor.

Heidelberg will look to continue its offensive onslaught on Monday. The Student Princes host Oberlin College at Peaceful Valley for a single game, starting at 4 p.m.
