Box Score 2 NEW CONCORD, Ohio -- The Heidelberg University baseball team split an OAC doubleheader on the road, winning and losing by a 7-6 score to Muskingum University. Cory Jacobs belted his second home run of the season in the nightcap, a 3-run blast in the first.
Heidelberg moves to 13-10 overall, 3-3 in the rugged OAC. The Muskies' record stands at 9-12, 2-4 in conference.
Joey Rydzewski led off the day with a single to center -- then in true Rydzewski style, stole second and third. He sauntered home on a single to right by Evan Long.
The Muskies tied the game in the third and took a 2-1 lead in the fifth off of game one starter Anthony Hajdu.
Long drove in two with a double to the gap in right center, plating Rydzewski and Matt Psychas. Parker Fronk followed with another double to right center to give HU a 4-2 lead.
The Student Princes added three in the top of the eighth. Fronk drove in Psychas with the third-straight single to start the frame. Later, a flyball to center by Alex Manner was mishandled, allowing Jacobs and Long to score.
Undeterred, the Muskies scored three of their own in the eighth and one in the ninth before Zach Doran was able to shut the door.
Hajdu (6-1) went five innings, allowing two runs on six hits. Brady Ansara worked 2.2 innings -- of which, the first two were six up - six down. He allowed two hits and a hit batter in the eighth, with two runs scoring via sacrifice flies. Doran tallied his second save, going 1.1 innings.
The nightcap started with a bang off the bat of Jacobs -- a three-run homer. But Muskingum would put up three of their own in the second.
Tied at 3, HU responded in the third. Manner drew a bases-loaded walk, forcing in Long. Darrin Shirk followed with a sacrifice fly to left that brought in Fronk.
The Muskies rallied for three in the bottom of the inning, using three hits, two walks and two HU errors.
It remained a 6-5 Muskie lead until the top of the sixth. Long walked and moved to second on a wild pitch. He scored on a two-out single by Shirk.
In the seventh, the hosts scored the go-ahead run on a two-out single to center. Heidelberg was unable to find an equalizer in the final two innings.
Marc Ochoa (1-2) took the loss, but pitched an effective 4.1 innings in relief of starter Cameron Deemer. Ochoa allowed just the one run on six hits. Deemer went 2.2 innings, allowing five earned runs on four hits and four walks.
Long was 3-for-5 on the day with three RBIs and five runs scored. He drew three walks and was hit by a pitch.
Coincidentally, the last for OAC games for Heidelberg have finished with a 7-6 final. Unfortunately, HU is 1-3 in those games.
Heidelberg will host Baldwin Wallace (13-9, 2-4) on Tuesday for a mid-week conference doubleheader. The twinbill will start at 1 p.m. in Peaceful Valley.
