Baseball keeps postseason hopes alive with sweep

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

WESTERVILLE, Ohio -- So you're saying there's a chance.

The Heidelberg University baseball team kept its postseason hopes alive with a road sweep of Otterbein University on Sunday. The Student Princes beat the Cardinals, 2-0 and 7-1, and improved to 19-16 overall and 8-8 in the OAC. Otterbein dropped to 24-12, 9-7.

With one conference doubleheader remaining, Heidelberg must sweep Wilmington in Tiffin next weekend -- and hope that Otterbein doesn't sweep Muskingum on the road. Unofficially, that combination would seem to push all tiebreakers into Heidelberg's favor to clinch a spot in the four-team tournament, to be played at Mount Union. The Purple Raiders have locked up the No. 1 seed and Marietta has secured the No. 2 seed. John Carroll and Baldwin Wallace are also in the hunt with HU and Otterbein for the final two seeds.

It was a classic pitchers' duel in the opener. Starter Anthony Hajdu and reliever Cameron Deemer combined for a 4-hit shutout of the hot-hitting Cardinals. Hajdu went the first 5.1 innings, striking out five while earning a no decision. Deemer (3-1) went the other 3.2, yielding just one hit -- which didn't come until the ninth. He induced a 6-4-3 double play to end the game.

The Heidelberg bats were held hitless for the first 4.2 by Otterbein's Craig Prince. A Matt Psychas double ended the no-hit bid.

Prince departed after seven innings -- then the Tricolor bats went to work. Reliever Collin Hoffman (3-2) recorded two outs, but walked Kyle Slovick and Alex Manner before being taken out. Evan Long greeted Jake Walters with an RBI single to right center, plating pinch-runner Ryan Marasti for the go-ahead run.

In the top of the ninth, Adam Hershberger added an insurance run with a solo homer to left.

The Student Princes mustered just three hits in the game one win.

Senior Cory Jacobs got the ball to start the nightcap for Heidelberg. After picking up a tough-luck loss in HU's 1-0 loss to Ohio Northern last weekend, Jacobs himself made sure he would receive plenty of run support in Westerville.

Heidelberg scored five runs in the fourth to break a scoreless tie -- thanks to two Cardinal errors and three HU hits. Jacobs hit a two-run single up the middle to score Long and Psychas. Parker Fronk followed with a sacrifice bunt, but an errant throw allowed Hershberger and Jacobs to score. Fronk, who advanced to third on the miscue, scored on a basehit by Darrin Shirk.

Shirk had another RBI hit in the sixth and Hershberger added another in the seventh.

Jacobs (1-3) went six strong innings on the mound. He fanned five and issued three hits. In his first two collegiate starts, he has allowed one run on five hits in 11 innings.

The lone Cardinal run of the day came via a Brock Frentzel solo shot in the seventh off of Marc Ochoa. Undaunted, Ochoa retired the next three Cardinals in order. Zach Doran worked the final two innings and didn't allow a hit.

After tallying three hits in the opener, HU pounded 12 hits in the nightcap.

Heidelberg is scheduled to play a pair of non-conference games this week -- at Trine University on Monday and home against Albion College on Wednesday. Both games are slated for 4 p.m. starts.
